The International System of Units (SI), commonly known as the metric system, is the international standard for measurement. The SI plays an essential role in international commerce and is commonly used in scientific and technological research and development. This cache is part of the SI geoart that allows you to learn about the SI units. Visit the introduction cache to learn more about this geoart.
Example of non-SI unit: bushel
The bushel is a unit of weight or mass based on an earlier measure of dry capacity. It is not an SI unit. I decide to include this unit in the SI series, as an example of how complicated a unit could be when not using International Systems of Units.
Bushel as a Volume unit
The imperial bushel, established by UK’s Weights and Measures Act of 1824, is defined to be the volume of 80 avoirdupois pounds of distilled water in air at 62 ℉. It equals 8 imperial gallons, 4 imperial pecks, or 36.36872 litres.
The Winchester bushel was the volume of a cylinder 18.5 inch in diameter and 8 inch high. The volume of this cylinder is 684.5π cubic inches, which is an irrational number.
The US bushel is a variant of the Winchester bushel, rounded to exactly 2150.42 cubic inches. It equals 8 US dry gallons, 4 US pecks, or approximately 35.2391 litres.
Bushel as a Weight unit
When grains are bought and sold on commodity markets, the bushels are units of weight. The definition of bushel differs per commodity, and on the moisture content of the commodity. For example, in United States market:
- A bushel of barley is 48lb.
- A bushel of oats is 32lb.
- A bushel of soybeans at 13% moisture is 60lb.

Blueberries are typically sold in US dry pint containers. 867 pints of blueberries equals how many imperial gallons? Round to an integer to get ABC.
What’s the weight of 14 bushels of wheat at 18% moisture in kilograms? Round to an integer to get DEF.
Final coordinates: N 39° 09.ABC W 077° 08.DEF
