The International System of Units (SI), commonly known as the metric system, is the international standard for measurement. The SI plays an essential role in international commerce and is commonly used in scientific and technological research and development. This cache is part of the SI geoart that allows you to learn about the SI units. Visit the introduction cache to learn more about this geoart.
History of SI
The Metre Convention (Convention du Mètre) was signed in Paris on May 20, 1875 by seventeen countries, including the United States. It created the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM), an intergovernmental organization under the authority of the General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM) and the supervision of the International Committee for Weights and Measures (CIPM), that coordinates international metrology and the development of the metric system.
Initially the Metre Convention was only concerned with the units of mass and length but, at the 6th meeting of the CGPM, it was revised and it extended the scope and responsibilities of the BIPM to other fields in physics. At the 11th meetings of the CGPM, the system of units it had established was named the International System of Units, with the abbreviation SI.
SI Units
The SI is made up of 7 base units that define the 22 derived units with special names and symbols.
The base units are:
The derived units and their relations are shown in this diagram:
This Geocache
In which year was the International System of Units published by Metre Convention? Subtract 1568 from this number to get ABC.
In 2019, a redefinition of the SI base units came into force. BIPM published the 9th edition of the SI Brochure. How many chapters and appendices are in this brochure? Sum these two counts to get D.
What is 0℃ in kelvin? Multiply by 100, divide by 607, and add 74 to get EFG.
Final coordinates: N 39° 07.ABC W 077° 0D.EFG
