The International System of Units (SI), commonly known as the metric system, is the international standard for measurement. The SI plays an essential role in international commerce and is commonly used in scientific and technological research and development. This cache is part of the SI geoart that allows you to learn about the SI units. Visit the introduction cache to learn more about this geoart.
Speed and velocity: metre per second (m/s)
The metre per second is an SI derived unit of both speed and velocity.
The velocity of an object is the rate of change of its position with respect to a frame of reference, and is a function of time. It is a physical vector quantity; both magnitude and direction are needed to define it.
The speed of an object is the magnitude of its velocity; it is thus a scalar quantity. The average speed of an object in an interval of time is the distance travelled by the object divided by the duration of the interval; the instantaneous speed is the limit of the average speed as the duration of the time interval approaches zero.
Speed: kilometres per hour (km/h)
The kilometre per hour is another unit of speed. It expresses the number of kilometres travelled in one hour.
Various Speeds
The fastest possible speed at which energy or information can travel is the speed of light in a vacuum c = 299792458 m/s. Matter cannot quite reach the speed of light, as this would require an infinite amount of energy.
Typically, a car on a freeway can travel at 30 m/s or 110 km/h. A modern high-speed train is faster at 90 m/s or 320 km/h. NASA’s Space Shuttle is several orders of magnitude faster during launch, to overcome the gravity of 2.04 million kilograms.
