I Claim Rùm for the People of Freedonia! Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

Simply Paul: As Kit/Clare and Keith were here at the time of the event and confirmed no one else turned up, I conclude I was the lone visitor on a caching mission and thus can safely archive this meet. Until next time...

Geocache Description:

Please join me at Dibidil Bothy on the beautiful Isle of Rùm to enjoy the sunset, and admire Eigg.
It's a long way from anywhere and I could use the company!

Where: Dibidil Bothy, Isle of Rùm. South end, overlooking Eigg.

When: 8-10pm on Thursday June 15th. Bring an evening meal - and a tent incase the Bothy is full.

What: A simple gathering of cachers to swap travel items and tall caching tales. When I invaded Lundy last year I enjoyed it so much I though I might build on that success and slowly develop an empire. I'm also back on Lundy in August, to refresh my claim for the principality.

How: Sea Kayak is an option, or a 9Km walk (each way) from the north. There's a path, of sorts... This is the way I'll reach GZ. If you also plan to walk, I could use the company as it's rough country and I may well be alone. Please note, in attempting to reach this event, you accept the personal risks involved as your own. I'm not responsible for the weather, or your falling over a cliff. If you doubt your abilities, please play safe and stay off the moors... Also, please wear appropriate clothing and boots for a walk of this sort, in Scotland.

Who: Brave cachers from far and wide! It's a 9km walk on rough terrain from the island's village - each way - and there's risk of bad weather, so this event won't suit everyone. I have others which might be 'more you' - please look at my profile for further details.

Why: It's a long story. In part I want to come here to attempt to locate an archived cache, as it was the only one left unfound on the island when I visited n 2011. I'm also keen to discover this end of the beautiful island of Rum, which I've admired from Eigg in the past. I've contacted SNH about placing fresh caches on Rum...

Note: From IsleOfRum.com: Q. How bad are the ‘Midges’?
A. Rum midges are notorious for being some of the worst on the west coast, so take suitable precautions. The village shop sells midge head nets/jackets, a range of different insect repellents, mosquito coils and incense sticks. Midges usually start to appear at the beginning of June and disappear with the first frosts around October. They don’t come out when it’s windy and if you walk at a brisk pace, you will be too fast for them.

Also important: The is no CalMac ferry to Rum on Thursday, but there is a sailing from Mallaig at 10:15 on Wednesday, with 2pm and 4.20pm sailings back on Friday (same boat. Take the early one to cruise to Canna and back). There's a campsite on Rum for Wednesday night, as well as accommodation at the castle, which is quite memorable.
