Although it is still winter in New Jersey, this wacky cruise ship will voyage near the equator to visit the warm tropical climate of Sri Lanka!

Sri Lanka is an island off the southern coast of the Indian subcontinent in South Asia. Until 1972 it was known as Ceylon. It is a diverse country, home to many religions, languages and ethnicities, including the Sinhalese, Sri Lankan Tamils, Moors, Indian Tamils, Burghers, Malays, Kaffirs and the aboriginal Vedda.

Sri Lankan food is inspired by many different cultures and is one of the most complex cuisines of South Asia. Sri Lanka's role as a major trade hub and periods of colonization paved the way for this exotic cuisine, which blends indigenous ingredients and cooking techniques with influences from Indian, Portuguese, Dutch, Malay and a host of other world food traditions. Sri Lankan and Indian food employ the same lineup of spices -- cardamon, cumin, coriander, cloves, ginger and more -- but in different mixtures and grinds. Sri Lankan cuisine is sometimes characterized as a cross between southern Indian and Thai food.

Traditional Rice and Curry dishes are the staple food of Sri Lanka, but there are many other specialties such as Hoppers (bowl-shaped rice pancakes layered with egg), Pittu (a molded and steamed rice-flour log flecked with coconut flakes and served with a pitcher of coconut milk), String hopper (strings of rice-flour dough squeezed through a sieve and then steamed), and Lamprais (a dish of Dutch origin comprising rice cooked in a meat stock and slowly baked in a banana leaf). This port of call will offer hungry cachers “Sri Lankan food the way it’s meant to be."
