Geocache Description:

Josephine’s Walking Tour of Elizabeth City

Welcome to Elizabeth City! This cache is not at the posted coordinates!

Josephine’s Walking Tour of Elizabeth City starts at City Hall and ends at the cache. There is a little bounce due to the presence of Elizabeth City’s many skyscrapers, but the locations are easy enough to find.
Your walk will be about 4/10 of a mile and is wheelchair friendly (there may be a few bumpy places). The cache can be found at N 36 AB.CDE W 076 FG.HIJ

For this cache, Josephine will be awarding an Nth to Find prize. The first 12 finders’ names will be scratched onto 12 of Josephine’s cookies. The first cookie she eats will indicate the Nth to Find winner.

Step 1: Begin at N 36° 18.045 W 076° 13.295. Welcome to the City Hall complex! There was recently a building here, but the city razed it. New clue! Nearby is a pod of big blue mailboxes, the kind where you can deposit outgoing mail. A=the number of big blue mailboxes nearby, minus 2.

Step 2: N 36° 18.048 W 076° 13.313. From this vantage point at the corner of E Colonial and N Pool, looking south, you can see the back of both courthouses. The US courthouse is to your left and the Pasquotank County courthouse is to your right. E = the number of brick chimneys visible on the US courthouse.

Step 3: N 36° 18.070 W 076° 13.359. Here you find yourself on the walkway between the Witherspoon Library and the Public Safety Building. I=the number of lampposts along this walkway between the two buildings, subtract 2.

Step 4: N 36° 18.023 W 076° 13.435. You are now on the corner near Elizabeth City's home grown coffee shop. Stop in for a cup! Locals will tell you this beats any coffee shop in the world. J=the number of large picture windows on Muddy's eastern wall visible from this vantage point.

Step 5: N 36° 18.021 W 076° 13.414. The old Southern Hotel. The Wright Brothers stayed here on the way to Kitty Hawk. F=the first number in the street address above the door.

Step 6: N 36° 18.021 W 076° 13.409. A plaque on the wall commemorates a newspaper once published at this site. B=the third digit of the circa date.

Step 7: N 36° 18.021 W 076° 13.368. The memorial to war hero Seth Perry. H=the second digit of his birth day.

Step 8: N 36° 18.015 W 076° 13.365. A gift from Elizabeth City State University to the people of Elizabeth City. G=the number of words on the third line of this plaque.

Step 9: N 36° 18.014 W 076° 13.353. Learn some history of Pasquotank County. D=the number of words on the third and fourth lines.

Step 10: N 36° 18.021 W 076° 13.328. The Civil War monument, between the county and federal courthouses. C=the number of letters in the third line of the inscription.

Step 11: Put it all together and go find the cache!
