A cache in the wonderful Astrakiano gorge.
Μια κρύπτη στο υπέροχο Αστρακιανό φαράγγι.

E4 CTC – Cretan Trail Cashes- is an effort by geocachers who live or love Crete to place geocaches along the whole E4 trail from the easternmost to the westernmost point of Crete. E4 European Trail can be mostly hiked but also partly driven.

We placed this cache on a hike organized by the Mountaineering Club of Heraklion along the Astraki canyon. There’s a well constructed trail, though not well preserved, with wooden parapets, steps and bridges that make the crossing easy, safe and environmental friendly.

The whole of the gorge offers many beautiful sights with rich and various vegetation and water running during winter and spring time. It’s about 11 km long, it takes four hours to cross it and can be well combined with geocaching: GC3J7TJ Kolomodis -Astrakiano Canyon at the starting point, then GC408T1- Neraidospilio at a paradise spot and finally GC213EM Canyons near the end of the trail, very close to Skalani village.

Watermills were built lengthwise the gorge route, as there was abundant water in the area. Nowadays, the ruins of some watermills are still found in the gorge. This cache is placed by one of them, one that can rarely be found in Crete. It’s a double watermill with two waterfall towers, called Paterikos.

Very near the mill there is a fine stone bridge of the 16th century, called Astrakiani Kamara. It was built on the small dirt road connecting the villages of Astraki and Sgourokefali. This road offers access to the cache by car also.

The cache is a film canister, so you need to bring your pen. Please, hide it well again!

Οι κρύπτες κατά μήκος του Ευρωπαϊκού μονοπατιού Ε4 αποτελούν μια προσπάθεια των γαιο-παικτών που μένουν ή έρχονται συχνά στην Κρήτη να τοποθετηθούν κρύπτες σε όλο το μήκος του, από την ανατολική ως τη δυτική άκρη του νησιού. Το Ε4 είναι βασικά πεζοπορικό μονοπάτι, πολλά κομμάτια του όμως βρίσκονται σε δρόμους.

Τοποθετήσαμε αυτήν την κρύπτη στη διάρκεια μιας πεζοπορίας κατά μήκος του Αστρακιανού φαραγγιού που οργάνωσε ο Ορειβατικός Σύλλογος Ηρακλείου. Το φαράγγι είναι άνετα προσβάσιμο, με ένα πολύ καλά διαμορφωμένο μονοπάτι, αν και όχι ιδιαίτερα συντηρημένο, με ξύλινα γεφύρια, σκαλοπάτια, στηθαία, χώρους αναψυχής και άλλες τεχνικές προσβάσεις που προσφέρουν εύκολη και ασφαλή περιήγηση-χωρίς να αλλοιώνουν στο ελάχιστο το φυσικό περιβάλλον.

Το φαράγγι προσφέρει πάμπολλες ομορφιές με πλούσια και ποικίλη βλάστηση και με αρκετό νερό το χειμώνα και την άνοιξη. Έχει μήκος περίπου 11 χλμ και η διάσχισή του διαρκεί 4 ώρες. Μπορεί να συνδυαστεί υπέροχα με άλλες κρύπτες: GC3J7TJ Kolomodis -Astrakiano Canyon στην αρχή του, μετά GC408T1- Neraidospilio σε ένα παραδεισένιο σημείο και τέλος GC213EM Canyons προς την έξοδό του κοντά στο χωριό Σκαλάνι.

Κατά μήκος όλου του φαραγγιού είχαν κτιστεί στο παρελθόν πολλοί νερόμυλοι, αφού το νερό ήταν αρκετό. Σήμερα φαίνονται τα ερείπια τους σε πολλά σημεία. Τοποθετήσαμε την κρύπτη κοντά σε έναν από αυτούς, ένα διπλό μύλο με δύο πύργους υδατόπτωσης, που λέγεται « Πατερικός Μύλος». Στην Κρήτη τέτοιοι διπλοί μύλοι είναι ελάχιστοι.

Λίγο πιο κάτω είναι η Αστρακιανή Καμάρα, ένα περίτεχνο, πέτρινο, τοξωτό γεφύρι του 16ου αιώνα, στο δρόμο που ενώνει τους Αστρακούς με το Σγουροκεφάλι. Ο δρόμος αυτός προσφέρει πρόσβαση στην κρύπτη με αυτοκίνητο επίσης.

Η κρύπτη είναι ένα κουτάκι από φιλμ, οπότε πρέπει να έχετε μαζί σας στυλό. Παρακαλώ, ξανακρύψτε το προσεκτικά.
