A cache at the beginning of one of the two canyons in the area, the Astrakiano canyon.
Μια κρύπτη στο ξεκίνημα ενός από τα δύο φαράγγια της περιοχής, στο Αστρακιανό φαράγγι.
The area is called Kolomodis, a name starting from the Byzantine period, meaning a fertile agricultural area giving plenty of products. The small river flowing along the canyon has got the same name.
In the times of the Turkish occupation there used to be many inns in the area offering accommodation and food to travelers. Today you can see many vineyards around, as this region of Crete produces well-known wine.
Near the parking area there is the small church of Profitis Elias with its characteristic blue cupola. The cache is hidden about 370 m away from the suggested parking area.
If you wish to hike down the canyon, you can go for GC213EM Canyons geocache, too. It’s a wonderful hike, about 8.5 km until near Skalani village. The gorge has rich vegetation and very beautiful spots, especially in springtime.
Η περιοχή ονομάζεται Κολομόδης. Το όνομα είναι παραφθορά των λέξεων Καλό Μόδιον, όπου μόδιον ήταν μονάδα μέτρησης σιτηρών τη Βυζαντινή περίοδο. Το ποταμάκι που διατρέχει το φαράγγι έχει το ίδιο όνομα.
Την εποχή της Τουρκοκρατίας υπήρχαν πολλά χάνια τριγύρω, προσφέροντας στέγη και φαγητό στους ταξιδιώτες. Σήμερα η περιοχή καλύπτεται από αμπελώνες, απ’ όπου βγαίνει το γνωστό κρασί των Πεζών.
Κοντά στο προτεινόμενο χώρο στάθμευσης βρίσκεται το εκκλησάκι του Προφήτη Ηλία με το χαρακτηριστικό του γαλάζιο τρούλο. Η κρύπτη βρίσκεται γύρω στα 370 μ από το χώρο στάθμευσης.
Αν επιθυμείτε να περπατήσετε το φαράγγι, μπορείτε να το συνδυάσετε με την κρύπτη GC213EM Canyons. Είναι μια υπέροχη βόλτα, περίπου 8,5 χλμ που καταλήγει κοντά στο χωριό Σκαλάνι. Το φαράγγι έχει πλούσια βλάστηση και πολλά όμορφα σημεία, ιδίως την άνοιξη.
