KowaiBaz: The area around GZ has completely changed - there is a lot of forestry project work underway and the container is missing with no suitable replacement sites nearby.

Geocache Description:

There are are a number of waymarked trails in Cruagh Wood; the Slí na Sláinte ("path to health") loop of forest road is about 4km long and provides some outstanding views of Dublin City and the surrounding mountains. The Dublin Mountains Way passes through here and there is a mountain access route up to the open mountain.

Situated about 16km to the south of Dublin city, Cruagh or Coill Na Craobhaí is one of a number of three mountain summits (Kilakee, Glendoo) identified as such on OS maps though it differs little in altitude from its immediate surroundings. At its highest point it is some 522m above sea level and offers probably the best views (weather permitting) over Dublin city and surroundings which lies in the flat plain below. The main rock formation is granite.

A short walk from the car park (about 200m from the Waypoint) will take you to the start of the loop, with the path then forking left and right.  The walk can be completed in either direction.

The cache is a camouflaged plastic container hidden about 35m off the main path at the fork.  The ground is uneven but could be managed by children with adult assistance as it is only a short trek. It should be an easy find, although tree cover may make it slightly more difficult, hence the extra half star difficulty.

It contains plenty of trade items, including a 7 tined, telescopic executive back-scratcher for FTF

The Cruagh Geocaching trail
I have placed seven geocaches along this route: 4 Traditional hides, 2 Unknown caches (one to be solved at home, the other to be solved at the location), and an enigmatic and difficult Multi Stage cache. Although the walk can be completed in either direction, I would suggest an anticlockwise approach for geocachers planning to search for all seven hides. Turning right at the fork will, initially, appear to be taking you further away from the caches, (if you watch your GPSr), but the path doubles back before long and your GPS will be happy again.
A 100% successful campaign would ideally see the order of events as:

GC47Q64 Have you got the right tine?
GC47Q6J The hills are alive with the sound of music [Puzzle box]
GC47Q6Y Cruagh Cryptek [Stage I]
GC47Q6Y Cruagh Cryptek [Final]
GC47Q7D I lúib na Ccoille Craobhaí
GC47Q7V Half a Click
GC47Q8B Little Dodder
GC47Q90 The day the music died
GC47Q6J The hills are alive with the sound of music [Final]

Good luck!

Getting there
From the city centre, take the N81 south, direction Blessington.  At Terenure continue straight on in the direction of Rathfarnham. The village is bypassed but continue on straight until you reach a right hand junction with a church on one side and the Yellow House pub opposite. Turn right here onto Ballyboden road.  After 2kms or so the road forks with the R116 straight ahead and the R115 to the right. You may reach Cruagh by either route. After approx 4 kms either way you reach the third class road on which Cruagh Wood car park is situated. The R116 is recommended particularly for the fine view of the city below from the viewing point at its junction with the third class road leading to Cruagh Wood.

The Dublin Mountaineer rambler bus serves this site (Cruagh/Killakee bus stop).

The area is managed and maintained by Coillte and the cache is placed in line with the “Leave No Trace” principle.
