Just to the West of this spot is the mighty Columbia River. Approximately 1,243 miles long, it originates from British Columbia, Canada and empties into the sea to the West of here along the border of Washington and Oregon. Obviously it is the largest river in the Pacific Northwest, and 4th largest by volume in the US (behind the Mississippi, the Ohio, and the St. Lawrence rivers). The Snake River is its largest tributary.
But today's river is quite different than it used to be. Historically the water level and flow was more variable, and flooding did occur. Now the river is heavily dammed, which provides hydroelectric energy but also regulates the water's flow and allows for better agriculture in this area (just take a look across the street). Especially once the Grand Coulee dam was completed in 1942, Pasco was better able to irrigate this area and expand its agricultural footprint.
