Kennewick first sprang into existence as a bustling railroad construction camp in 1884, when the Northern Pacific Railway started laying track on the West side of the Columbia River. However, Kennewick did not truly become established until 1902, after irrigation made farming possible. Prior to modern developments, this area has been inhabited for thousands of years by indigenous people, the most famous of which is 'The Ancient One' or 'Kennewick Man', a nearly complete 9,200 year-old skeletal specimen found in the banks of the Columbia River in 1996. Lewis and Clark's expedition came through this area in 1805 on their journey West, and the community has continued to expand and grow steadily since then. The beauty of this land and the enduring spirit of the people who've lived in this region for millennia is ingrained in the vibrant culture of our present-day city. As our industries and population have boomed, the infrastructure and roadways have grown with them. 10th Avenue, which has been a main thoroughfare for decades, now reaches all the way to the West edge of Kennewick at Clearwater Avenue.
