Where: The folly castle above Plas Brondanw, Llanfrothen, Gwynedd. LL48 6SW. Note the suggested parking place. The gardens below will be open (the house was owned by Clough Williams-Ellis, the architect behind Portmeirion) but there is a charge to explore them. Free entry to the event location via public paths.
When: 12.30-1.30pm, Tuesday February 19th 2019.
Who: Cachers from far and wide! New to geocaching or caching events? You'll be made especially welcome. There's a caching group staying at Portmeirion this week, so this event would be suitable - even ideal - for them.
Why: This is one of my very favourite corners of North West Wales and I think it deserves to be better known. I love how caching lets you introduce cachers to special places. It's also a good spot for Whovians as the opening scene of The Five Doctors was shot here, among many other TV shows and films. Plus I like follies and have held events in a couple in the past, in 2018 and 2017.
What: A simple gathering of cachers to exchange travel items and caching wisdom. There's shelter at GZ but please dress for the weather (it's North Wales in February!) and approach with care if snowy/icy. There's a 2003 cache close by to find on the way in or out if you wish: Folly Foot Castle by BESS'S FRIENDS. It's one I've visited at least four times since finding it in September 2004. 25% FPs.
How: The best route to the folly from suggested parking is up the road (walk to face oncoming traffic, if there is any, and take extra care if caching with children) to the Plas Brondanw gardens. A fancy gate on the right hand side of the road leads to a track/path which goes up to the castle through the woods. It's not a large climb but it can be muddy so wear your better boots!
