STARI GRAD (GRAD SMLEDNIK)

Grad Smlednik ali Stari grad nad Smlednikom je bil grad, ki je stal na vzpetini severno od Šmarne gore, imenovani Smledniški hrib. Danes so vidne le ruševine.

Prvi lastnik gradu naj bi bil leta 1136 vitez Ulrih Smledniški, ki je bil podložen grofom Andeškim iz Kamnika. V 13. in 14. stoletju so bili smledniški vitezi iz rodu gospodov Planinskih-Svibenskih in leta 1328 sta brata Henrik in Ulrih Planinski zastavila grad. Leta 1332 so ga prodali Frideriku žovneškemu svobodniku, torej poznejšim grofom Celjskim.

Po izumrtju Celjanov leta 1456 je gospostvo prešlo v posest njihovih dedičev Habsburžanov in postalo deželnoknežja komorna posest. Upravljali so ga številni zastavni imetniki. Leta 1795 so ga kupili Lazariniji.

Prvotni grad je bil samostojen obrambni stolp z obrambnim jarkom, zgrajen v romanskem slogu. V obdobju gotike so okrog njega obzidali ploščad trapezaste oblike. Po potresu leta 1511 so stolpu dozidali bivalne prostore in zunanje obzidje z obrambnimi stolpiči v renesančnem slogu. Grad so obnavljali do leta 1610. Predstavlja zasnovo in razvoj srednjeveškega gradu v osrednji Sloveniji v najčistejši obliki.

ENGLISH

SMLEDNIK CASTLE (STARI GRAD)

The Smlednik Castle is best known as Stari Grad (meaning “old castle”). It was standing on the Smlednik Hill next to Zbilje lake and to the north of Šmarna gora. Nowadays, only its ruins remain.

In 1136, the first owner of the castle was reported to be Ulrich of Smlednik, a knight whose superordinates were the Counts of Andechs from Kamnik. In the 13th and the 14th century, the knights of Smlednik belonged to the gentry of Planina and Svibno, and in 1328, brothers Henrik and Ulrich of Planina pawned the castle. In 1332, it was sold to Friderik, freeman of Žovnek, meaning to the family that later became the Counts of Celje.

After this line of the family died out in 1456, the seigneury became the property of their heirs, the Habsburgs, thus becoming a princely estate managed by several holders of liens. In 1795, it was bought by the Lazarini family.

The original castle was an individual fortified tower with a moat built in Romanesque style. During the Gothic period, a trapezoid platform was built around it. After the earthquake in 1511, an extension was added to the tower with living quarters and an outer defensive wall with fortified turrets in Renaissance style. The castle was being renovated until 1610. It represents the clearest embodiment of the design and the development of a medieval castle in central Slovenia.

In 2005, a part of the defensive wall and the castle well were renovated.

Description of the castle is taken, with permission of members of the study course “Understanding the Heritage of Smlednik” (thank you, granny!), from a booklet entitled “Walk through Smlednik and Valburga” which was prepared by members of the study course.
