Geocache Description:

English description

Lubnik

Pripovedka o nastanku gore Lubnik

As its name indicates, the Gorenjska region is distinguished by mountains (gore means mountains). People of Gorenjska have always lived in close connection with mountains, which is evident from their culture and their past, preserved in museums. Stories from the mountains are a part of the history we share, which can be found in the museums.

Škofja Loka Museum presents Lubnik mountain and items of the Copper Age, Intermunicipal Museum Kamnik introduces Alpine dairy farming and life at Velika planina, Tržič Museum highlights the ski competition at Zelenica, Museum of Apiculture in Radovljica presents breeding stations which are located on the way to the Roblekov dom mountain hut on Mt. Begunjščica, Museum of Gorenjska in Kranj pays tribute to the 40th anniversary of the first Slovenian ascent of Mount Everest, the preparation of which took place at Jošt mountain in Kranj, the Slovenian Alpine Museum in Mojstrana with its exhibition Mountain Paradise invites visitors to reflect upon our past and present attitude to mountains, which can be internalized on Golica mountain. By May 2020, mountains and museums will become a cache of adventure!

Lubnik

Lubnik is a 1025 m high mountain, which rises steeply to the west of Škofja Loka. In clear weather, its mountain hut offers a beautiful view of the nearby and distant surroundings. Lubnik, which was visited already in prehistoric times, is now a highly popular destination for hikers and cyclists who like to make the seven-kilometre ascent from Podpulfrca to Breznica pod Lubnikom.

The tale of the Lubnik mountain formation

Once upon a time, two brothers giants lived in the wider area of Škofja Loka. One of them dwelt on Križna gora and the other lived on Črni vrh. They were roughnecks who wasted no time on work. They rather stole cattle from farmers, cooked them on grill and gained weight. When there were no more cattle in Selška Valley, the giant from Križna gora stomped to Poljanska Valley, broke in barns in the middle of the night and stole cattle from farmers. The giant from Črni vrh did not like it at all, so he cracked some rocks and started throwing them towards Križna gora to kill his rival. Even though he was as strong as ninety-nine bears, his heavy rocks did not reach Križna gora after all – they fell down to the place where Lubnik mountain stands today. The giant from Križna gora took his revenge, for sure. He started throwing rocks towards Črni vrh to kill his rival. Even though he was as strong as hundred bears, his heavy rocks did not reach Črni vrh after all – they fell down to the place where Lubnik mountain stands today. This is how the two giants threw so much rocks and boulders on the field between Križna gora and Črni vrh that they made a new mountain.
