Geocache Description:

English description

As its name indicates, the Gorenjska region is distinguished by mountains (gore means mountains). People of Gorenjska have always lived in close connection with mountains, which is evident from their culture and their past, preserved in museums. Stories from the mountains are a part of the history we share, which can be found in the museums.

Škofja Loka Museum presents Lubnik mountain and items of the Copper Age, Intermunicipal Museum Kamnik introduces Alpine dairy farming and life at Velika planina, Tržič Museum highlights the ski competition at Zelenica, Museum of Apiculture in Radovljica presents breeding stations which are located on the way to the Roblekov dom mountain hut on Mt. Begunjščica, Museum of Gorenjska in Kranj pays tribute to the 40th anniversary of the first Slovenian ascent of Mount Everest, the preparation of which took place at Jošt mountain in Kranj, the Slovenian Alpine Museum in Mojstrana with its exhibition Mountain Paradise invites visitors to reflect upon our past and present attitude to mountains, which can be internalized on Golica mountain. By May 2020, mountains and museums will become a cache of adventure!

Sveti Jošt nad Kranjem

Sveti Jošt nad Kranjem is an 847-metre high hill, where the people of Kranj like to exercise and do some sports daily. St. Jošt is the patron saint of pilgrims who have always come to visit the church on the top of the hill from near and far. The pilgrim route flourished and the priest Simon Vačavnik deserves most of the credit for it. The church is also known for a large bell with engraved Prešeren’s verses. The bell was cast from the Turkish cannons which were confiscated in the Battle of Navarino in 1827.

Jošt was also one of the training grounds for Andrej Štremfelj and Nejc Zaplotnik who prepared for the Mount Everest expedition in 1979. They would run to Jošt from their homes, four to five times a week. They would often continue to Špičasti vrh or Mohor hills. Andrej recalls that after a heavy snowfall he would not meet a living soul when running to Jošt at 10 am in that years. Today, the trail through snow is broken at 7 in the morning already.
