Geocache Description:

This cache was nominated in the 2019 Victorian Cache of the Year Awards (Best 'Other' Cache).

Estimated time to complete: approximately 40 min for stage one
Estimated distance to travel: approximately 2.7km round trip

This is the first stage of a two-stage, single cartridge Wherigo treasure hunt through the wonderful sculpture collection of Deakin University.

Sixteen sculptures have been selected for the hunt. They are located throughout the University’s Burwood campus, which spans both sides of Gardiner’s Creek.

Although the Wherigo won’t tell you where the sculptures are, once you are close enough they will register as found and add to your tally.

When you have found 10 sculptures you will unlock coordinates to this Deakin Art Lover cache. If you continue on to reach 14 sculptures, you will then unlock the coveted Deakin Art Expert cache.

The cartridge remembers your finds so you can close it and return to the hunt whenever you have a spare moment.

Note: only sculptures which are outside and away from overhanging walkways (which can interfere with GPS tracking) have been included. Thus only four sculptures in the forecourt and close surrounds of the Deakin Art Gallery are counted (although more are present). Across the creek in the Elgar Rd precinct there are two sculptures to find.

Setting up the Wherigo
You will first need to install a Wherigo player app (available for iOS or Android). Both caches make use of the same cartridge, so this only needs to be downloaded once by clicking Deakin Sculpture Wherigo cartridge (choosing the Pocket PC version). You'll get a window asking if you want to open in the Wherigo player, which you should do, and then the "Deakin Sculpture Wherigo" should appear in your list of cartridges ready play.

Playing the cartridge
To get you started, you will see the location of “Echidna, 2013” by Dean Bowen and be able to navigate to it. Thereafter, you will need to discover the sculptures on your own. When you do find one, a bicycle bell should ring and the listing should appear in your inventory. Tap on the name and scroll down for further details. Depending on the direction of your approach, you may need to fully circle some sculptures before they register.

Android apps may drop sculptures if closed whilst hunting. Ensure you save as you go.
