Geocache Description:

The property owner’s enthusiastic permission has been given to place a cache here. For more information on the origins of this place, read past the following SCAR information.

This cache is for the SCAR event, and should not be sought out until the event starts after 5:30 pm on May 26th.  It is part of a series of Legacy Caches hidden by S.A.G.A. to celebrate 10 years of the Saskatoon Cache and Release event!  There are a couple of things related to SCAR that you should know about this cache.  If you are lucky enough to be First to Find, take the domino and trade it in at the barbecue event for a special prize!  Everyone who finds this cache during SCAR should take a popsicle stick, and if you are able to collect sticks from all 10 you can also redeem them at the barbecue for a special prize!  We do ask that each cacher only take one domino, even if you are FTF for more than one Legacy cache.  We would like to spread the wealth to as many cachers as possible!  Happy hunting!

In 2010, SCAR was held on May 28 and 29 by Sask_girl & Novy.  This was the first year where the weather didn't cooperate, and it just poured buckets!  (Environment Canada says that the amount of precipitation those days was 10.7mm Friday and 25.9mm Saturday).  People petered out early and the number of finds was down, but everyone looked forward to finding the rest of the caches through summer.  The Friday night midnight flash mob was hosted by rider_fan at the Tim Horton's at 51st St and Millar Ave, and was logged attended by 30 cacher names.  On Sunday afternoon May 30 we gathered for the barbecue get-together in bennykidd's backyard... or at least that was the plan!  The back-up location was in their garage and house, so we were all pretty cozy!  28 cacher names logged the barbecue event, which played out to about 46 people.

This year caches were hidden by 24 different cacher names:  bennykidd, Bitzer, candlelightforge, Delaronde_Hillbillies, dunwrkn, el_fudgeeo (who hid 28), grayswan, Grinch, Hurleyanne, jellybean12, klm882, League of Robots, mackdog2, nirakmit, pilot172, pogie24, pokecheck1, rider_fan (now rider_fans), rookie (now Nurse-J), Sask_girl & Novy (who hid 50), schnor, scratch1, SNSGKrieger (now Houlagans, who hid 31), and yourshoulderangel (now deadman's angel).

The main SCAR event was logged attended by 33 different cacher names.  The ones not included in the list of hiders include: 3pollyc, DTSTAnderson, Dragonfly E & N, dunwrkn, Firesong, henchman, jll294, kavanagh, lil satan, Nurse-J, overkill77, Roads Scholar, sktourismgal, Tinsel!, and ZooAmy.   Some people only logged the final barbecue event:  foodninja, Northbound, pangeanshift, and Stewie_Wiggles.

Award Winning Innovation

In 1985, after testing building techniques on two nearby houses, Cliff Shockey built this structure to house his business.

He had been researching, building and refining stackwall or cordwood construction that used passive solar energy for heating.

Think of double walled brick construction. Same idea.  A 9” outer wall of salvaged wood, usually phone poles and beams from barns, a particle sheathing with insulation, a vapour barrier and a 6” interior wall.  The found wood is set into concrete.  You can see that bottles and wood wagon wheels were all set in as exterior decoration.  On the interior, some of the inside pieces were left longer and placed as small shelves.   This building was his first use of in-floor heating.  Something he continued using in subsequent projects.

His houses were built with a great deal of thought and research.  Huge windows face south with overhangs that deflects the summer sun but lets in the winter sun.  Rectangular houses with few interior partitions allow for the passive heat to go throughout the whole house.  And that’s only the beginning!

Through all of this, Cliff is not a builder by trade.  It was through his interest and activity in the Solar Energy Society of Saskatchewan and a chance article about cordwood structures in a magazine that sparked these innovative and efficient buildings.

Enjoy searching for a medium camouflaged container.
