This event involves hiding caches during the time leading up to
the SCAR event, finding the SCAR caches over the designated 24 hour
period and then meeting-up to swap SCAR stories & award
prizes.
The Hides:
Hide one or more caches between now and
Monday May 25th. Caches hidden for the event are to be
placed and submitted before or on May 25th to ensure that the
reviewer has sufficient time to approve all the hides. Please
include SCAR2010 at the end
of the title (e.g. My Cool Cache - SCAR2010) to facilitate searches
by keyword. All SCAR caches should include a note to the
reviewer stating that it is placed for the SCAR event and should be
published the evening of Thursday May 27th, 24ish hours before the
official kick off of the SCAR event. Please mention on your cache
page that the cache is for the SCAR event, and should not be sought out until after
5:30pm on May 28th and any
logs before that should be deleted. The idea here is to give
everyone time to look at the cache listings and devise their battle
plans for when the hunt begins at 5:30.
We want to keep it simple & encourage creativity so here are
some rules about hides placed for SCAR:
-traditional caches only
-all caches sizes are allowed
-no puzzle or mystery caches
-no multicaches
-no earthcaches
-all hides must be hidden within approximately 85km of
N 52° 08.595 W 106°
39.169
which is the approximate centre of Saskatoon city limits.
-all hides must be made to remain permanent following the
event for everyone to find at their leisure
-We would appreciate it if each participant hides at least one
cache but it is not a requirement. If you are from out of town
& want to participate in hiding, talk to local cachers about
adopting or maintaining your SCAR cache. The main point of this
event is to help increase the local cache population. We all
benefit from caches being hidden & the more that are hidden
specifically for this event the more fun this 24 hour hunting
marathon will be for everyone. If you do not know how to hide a
cache then please email us & we will be happy to help you hide
your first cache. Also there is a great video tutorial by iceandrye
in BC about cache hiding. You can watch it here in the episode titled "An
Introduction to Geocaching".
The Hunt:
At 5:30pm on Friday May 28th,
all SCAR caches become fair game and the hunt begins. Feel free to
find as many or as few caches as you can and want. During the hunt,
please document the time of your find in the logbook to
inform subsequent finders how close they are behind you. You may
also want to carry a notebook because you will need to keep track
of your stats over the weekend. You may also want to make notes to
help you with voting for the wrap up event.
The
Gathering:
At 1 pm Sunday May 30th, we
will gather for a meal to share stories and to award prizes.
bennykidd has graciously
offered their backyard for a BBQ. The Gathering has its own event
page. See it for details. Please post a 'will attend' on its event
page if you intend on appearing at the BBQ and how many will be
accompanying you so we can have an idea of numbers. All cachers are
welcome whether or not you've participated in the rest of SCAR2010
or not. The more the merrier!
Recognition/Prizes:
Credit should be given for accomplishments achieved during the
event. We will award these prizes at The Gathering at bennykidd's.
The categories are (but not limited to):
- Cacher with the most hides
- Cacher with the most finds
- Cacher with the most FTFs
- Cacher with the most STFs
- Cacher with the most DNF's (If you need to get a hint from
another cacher before finding the cache, this counts towards your
DNF total)
- Best story/worst mishap (must recount story to the party)
At an event later in the summer we will have another event to
award prizes for other SCAR achievements such as:
- Cleverest hide
- Your overall favorite find
- Best hide by a cacher with no previous hides
- Best cache prepared & hidden by a kid (some parental help is
ok)
- Best cache listing/description page (online of course)
- Favorite cache at a Historical spot
- Favorite cache at a Scenic spot
- Favorite micro/nano cache found
- Cache with the most creative container/cammo
After discussion with other cachers we decided that by awarding
these prizes near the end of the summer it gives everyone a chance
to find most of the caches eligible for prizes. Makes for a more
informed vote. We are hoping to figure out a way for voting to take
place online so that we can have the tallying done. If all else
fails we will email around an excel voting sheet like we did last
year. If you have any suggestions for prize categories or care to
donate a prize please contact us.
Post Event:
All SCAR caches should be made permanent for all cachers to
find at their leisure following the event. Remember whatever you
hide you must maintain. Hopefully you all will get busy with lots
of hides to help make this event a success as well as increase our
cache population in the Saskatoon area.
Hope to see lots of participation. Last year's event was such a
fun caching weekend. Hopefully this year will be even better :)
Nothing like a fresh batch of hides and a 24 hour marathon of cache
hunting to get your blood pumping :)
Also don't forget about the Midnight
Dine And Dash Flash Version III - a mini event happening
within the SCAR event :) Thanks to rider_fan for putting it on!
Special thanks to Kris12345 for creating the 2010 logo. Feel
free to include it on your SCAR2010 cache listings or use it anyway
you like as long as its in a respectable manner ;p If anyone wants
a SCAR2010 T-shirt we estimate that they will cost around $16 each
unless costs have went up. Usually we can get sizes from small to
3XL. If you would like a shirt please contact us with size &
logo preference.
