Geocache Description:

Series around the wonderful Lancelot Clark Storth (LCS) Nature Reserve, looked after by Cumbria Wildlife Trust. Please read the info, follow the route, be gentle searching, and respect this great location. Also enjoy the views, rocks and nature!

Lancelot Clark Storth was purchased in 1978. Burton Fell was given to the Trust in 1992 by the New Zealand descendants of William Atkinson. Park Wood and Hutton Roof Common are leased from Natural England and Hutton Roof Parish Council respectively.  The top of Hutton Roof gives extensive views all around.

Sir Gawain & the Green Knight is an early medieval poem about King Arthur's nephew Sir Gawain of Orkney, who was Arthur's greatest knight in the early tales until a certain French upstart called Lancelot came along in the Athurian romantic stories which replaced the traditional heroic ballads. The poem tells how Sir Gawain is challenged to find the green chapel, where the green knight lives. Gawain's worthiness and honour are tested, and although Gawain fails the third and final test he learns humility etc, etc. He is forgiven by the Green Knight and declared the greatest and worthiest knight ever.

"He scrambled up bankings where branches were bare,
Clambered up cliff faces crazed by the cold
Over misted moor and mountainside
He wandered onwards through the wildest woods
Then he presses ahead, picks up a path,
Enters a steep sided grove on his steed"

Directions: Go over the stile with it's cute gate, into the wild common. Head to the first obvious boulder then bare right picking the easiest terrain in an ESE direction. See map pic. Eventually you will meet the small but well trodden path that links the large cairn on the top of Uberash Breast see GC18FYX, with the trig point. On meeting the summit path, follow it to the cache, just off the path near some impressive cliffs.
After finding the cache, continue on the narrow path through the limestone pavement: look out for signs that the Green Knight is around in the form of impressive tree roots and other flora and fauna! Head for the Trig Point.
