Geocache Description:

Hincaster is a small village but with several interesting features, including a large canal tunnel.   It opened 18th June 1819.

The tunnel is at the north end of the village.  It's an impressive Scheduled Monument and well worth a look.  A fine old track carried the horses and the tow path over the hill, see The Horsepath.

The canal was superceded by the railway, which runs on the east side of the village.  It's the West Coast Main line, but an older branch line came off here for Milnthorpe and Arnside.  At one time it was busy carrying coal from Durham to the iron works in Furness.  It is now being turned into a lovely Trail which will eventually become accessible for those less mobile folk.

A small village green has a mounted boulder in the middle, and on the north side of the triangle of roads is an old Victorian post box and the Parish Notice Board reflecting an active community.  When you find the cache, you will need a pen.  Be gentle. It's not in the wall.
