The Horsepath is a delightful lane that carries the Lancaster Canal towpath over Tunnel Hill.
The hill is pierced by Hincaster Tunnel, built nearly 200 years ago to take the canal near the Sedgwick gunpowder works. It’s worth visiting both portals with their grand masonry. On hot days a cold air comes out of the tunnel.
A good view to the south is to be had from the top of the lane. Three 'accommodation' bridges cross the path and are listed structures in their own right. The path is only about a quarter of a mile from end to end and it is a great experience to walk back in time as you pass the same way as many boatmen and their horses. Plans are afoot to restore these northern reaches of the canal to Kendal – maybe horses will again walk the Horsepath while boats are legged through the tunnel.
There is space to park at either end but the easiest parking is on the East side, where the minor road goes under the dual carriageway. It is also a very pleasant walk east along the canal to Stainton, where the canal finally gains water.
The cache is NOT hidden under rocks – please do not move any of the stones on the side of the lane. Despite being on fairly high ground, the sides of the lane and the trees can interfere slightly with the GPS signal - current co-ords are the best I can get.
