Geocache Description:

Welcome to the 2010 Garden Island Adventure!

If you've been working on the Minnesota State Parks Wildlife Safari, and you've been wondering how in the heck you're going to get to the Garden Island cache, this may be your ticket!

The event is at the posted coordinates, on Garden Island. You're welcome to come to the event using whatever mode of transportation you like (your own boat, jetski, whatever you can find), but for those of us without things like this at our disposal, a boat has been reserved to bring us there.

We have 2 schedules provided below. The first (Schedule A) is for if you choose to take the trip in the boat we have reserved to get to the island. The second (Schedule B) is for if you choose to meet us on the island.

Tentative Event Schedule A - Boat Rental or Bring Your Boat Through Canada

8:45 am - 9:00 am - Meet in Warroad. Potential to carpool if anyone has open space. Donuts/Pastries/Cookies/Whatever I can find will be provided. You're on your own for a beverage.

9:00 am - Depart for Young's Bay in Angle Inlet.

11:45 am - Meet at Young's Bay in Angle Inlet.

12:00 noon - Depart for Garden Island.

12:45pm - Arrive at Garden Island.

12:45pm-1:45pm - Caching, Camaraderie, and Tall-Tales. Lunch?

1:45pm - Island event is over, depart to return back at Young's Bay, by way of Fort St. Charles

3:00pm - Arrive back at Young's Bay for the return trek to Northern Minnesota.

Tentative Event Schedule B - Meet Us At The Island

12:45pm - Meet us at Garden Island

12:45pm-1:45pm - Caching, Camaraderie, and Tall-Tales. Lunch?

1:45pm - Island event is over, but you're certainly welcome to follow us to Fort St. Charles!

If you're taking our boat or bringing your boat to the launch point at Angle Inlet...

  • The path we are taking goes through Canada in order to get back to Minnesota. This is partly to save money, and partly because most of the people who have shown interest in this trip have passports already. Which brings me to...
  • Passports are now required in order to cross into Canada. If you do not have a passport, well, I cannot stop you from trying to get across and back without one, but we won't be waiting for you if you get detained. We will need to clear customs twice - once between Warroad, MN and Sprague, MB and a second time at Jim's Corner, once we have arrived at Angle Inlet. Obviously we'll need to repeat both stops on the way back.
  • You may notice a lot of extra time is built into the schedule. Why? I'm told the lines at Jim's Corner may be longer than we expect. Also it gives us some elbow-room for doing extra things.
  • On the return trip from the Island, we'll also be stopping at Historic Fort St. Charles, where there is a multicache.
  • On the return trip through Canada (or on the way up, depending on time), we might as well grab this cache, so we can log a Manitoba cache.
  • There is a fee for the boat ride. I can't tell you how much it is at this time (since we don't know how many people there will be, or how long the ride will be), but it's $70/hr, and we can hold up to 8 people. Assuming a 3 hour trip, that brings us to $210. Divide that by 6-8 people and we end up with a pretty reasonable per-person rate. 1/8 of the rate is required as a deposit (more information sent after you sign up)
  • If we don't get enough people to sign up, the trip may be canceled. We're past this point! Yay!
  • If more than 1 boat-full sign up, we can get additional boats, so don't worry about being over-booked... (looking pretty certain to have 2 boats)
  • If the weather doesn't cooperate and the lake is too choppy, we may wait it out in Angle Inlet.
  • A boat has been reserved for the day. If you like, you can certainly make your own plans to bring your boat up, or rent from another vendor, and meet us on the island. If you do this, please post that in your Will-Attend.
  • Personally, we'll be camping at Zippel Bay State Park on Saturday and Sunday night, so if anyone else is staying there, maybe we can have s'mores around a campfire or something...

When posting your Will-Attend log...

  1. How are you going to get here? Our rented boat, your own boat via Canada, or something else?
  2. How many in your group?
  3. When we get closer to the event, we'd like to know where you're staying. No, we don't need to know specific information, but we'd like to know what city you're staying in so we know where you're coming from.
  4. We will be contacting everyone coming on the trip when we get closer to the trip for more information (exchange of cell phone numbers, etc.). If your e-mail address as listed with GroundSpeak is incorrect, or if you have a different address you'd like us to use, e-mail me and we'll use that instead.

Thanks to Fargnot, Paklid, WildFlower82, and everyone else who has blazed this trail before us to help make this a success!
