Die sogenannte Römerstraße im Freizeitpark Rheinaue ist ein Weg, der von 26 Abgüssen antiker, römischer Grabsteine gesäumt ist. Der geschichtlich bedeutenste Grabstein ist der des Zenturio Marcus Caelius, da dieser der einzige geschichtliche Beleg der Varus-Schlacht im "Teutoburger Wald" ist.

Caelius wurde um 45 v. Chr. in Bologna geboren und war ranghöchster Centurio der römischen Legion XVIII. Laut der Inschrift seines Grabsteins fiel er 9 n. Chr. in der Varus-Schlacht.

Bei seinem Grabstein handelt es sich um einen Kenotaph, der Caelius in der Mitte zwischen seinen beiden Sklaven Privatus und Thiaminus zeigt. Er trägt einen Muskelpanzer sowie einen langen Soldatenmantel. Der Stab aus Rebenholz zeigt seine Befehlsgewalt, die Orden auf seiner Brust sowie die Halsreifen und Armreifen sind militärische Auszeichnungen. Auf dem Kopf trägt er einen Kranz aus Eichenlaub, den er für die Rettung eines Bürgers aus Lebensgefahr erhalten hat.

Gefunden wurde der Grabstein im Militärlager Vetera in der Nähe von Xanten und wird seit 1893 im Rheinischen Landesmuseum Bonn ausgestellt. Dieses fertigte auch den hier zu sehenden Abguss an, der seit der Bundesgartenschau 1979 hier in der Rheinaue zu sehen ist.
The so-called Römerstraße in the park Freizeitpark Rheinaue is a path, which is lined with 26 casts of ancient Roman tombstones. The historically most important tombstone is that of the centurion Marcus Caelius, since this is the only historical evidence of the Varus battle in the "Teutoburg Forest".

Caelius was born in Bologna about 45 B.C. and was the highest ranking centurion of the Roman Legion XVIII. According to the inscription of his tombstone he fell 9 A.D. in the Varus battle.

His gravestone is a cenotaph, which shows Caelius in the middle between his two slaves, Privatus and Thiaminus. He wears a muscle armor and a long soldier's coat. The staff of vine shows his commanding power, the orders on his chest, and the cords and bracelets are military awards. On his head he wears a wreath of oak leaves, which he has received for the rescue of a citizen.

The tombstone was found in the Vetera military camp near Xanten and has been exhibited since 1893 in the museum Rheinisches Landesmuseum in Bonn. This museum also produced the cast to be seen here, which has been shown here in the Rheinaue since the Bundesgartenschau in 1979.
