To visit each continent of the world: (1) Africa, (2) Antarctica, (3) Asia, (4) Australia, (5) Europe, (6) North America & (7) South America. Do not hesitate to move this trackable to another cache even if it isn’t closer to a new continent. You never know where the trackable will meet someone preparing to leave on vacation. Likewise, do not hesitate to bring this trackable back the United States where it may find someone heading to a new continent. Upon completion of this mission, this trackable will be available for adoption.
I love finding trackables in caches. So, it has become my habit to launch ten new trackables into the wild each spring. In 2009, I launched ten gold ingots each heading to a different college. In 2010, I launched ten little turtles to visit each county in Oregon. In 2011, I launched ten unicorns each heading to one of the world’s most romantic cities.
In 2012, I am launching ten compass roses to visit each continent of the world. They are each named for a famous explorer: (1) Christopher Columbus, (2) Ferdinand Magellan, (3) Hernan Cortez, (4) Jacques Cousteau, (5) James Cook, (6) Leif Ericson, (7) Marco Polo, (8) Meriwether Lewis, (9) Neil Armstrong and (10) Vasco De Gamma.
Leif Ericson was a Norse explorer regarded as the first European to land in North America, nearly 500 years before Christopher Columbus. According to the Sagas of Icelanders, he established a Norse settlement on the northern tip of Newfoundland in modern-day Canada. It is believed that Leif was born around the 970s—the son of Erik the Red, an explorer and outlaw from Western Norway. Erik founded the first Norse colonies in Greenland, and was based at the family estate Brattahlíð in the so-called Eastern Settlement, where Leif had his upbringing.
