Geocache Description:

Rum is the largest of the Small Isles, a group of islands south of Skye. In partnership with Scottish Natural Heritage, in June 2017 I visited to collect abandoned caches and set fresh ones, with the intention of encouraging Geocachers to visit and experience this wild and beautiful miniature kingdom. Please dress for the weather, and expect a change of weather! Cache with care and consideration, and look up from your GPS or phone to enjoy this unique location.

Introduction: This walk was suggested to me by Lesley, the SNH ranger here, as a great place to see butterflies. It's a family-friendly circular walk of approx. 1.5miles or 2.4Km which is a fairly gentle introduction to Rum's wild interior. Allow at least an hour for the circular walk.

The location: The northwest corner of the Yellow Trail, which circles Croft 3 and crosses the Kinloch river. There's a map outside the Village Hall and waymark posts to follow.

The route: This can be reached from either direction on the Yellow Trail. Either take the gate on the right of the short track which leaves the village north of the river before you reach the green SNH offices/shed and walk up the hill to the trees, before turning left and following a fence/wall line west to the cache. Or, take the 'main road' west towards Harris/Kilmory to the south of the river, and look for a path to the right which soon crosses the river via a bridge, and then turns left to pass a small hut by a gate, and shortly afterwards turns right, uphill to the cache. It'd make sense to continue the loop rather than backtrack, regardless of the direction you walk the loop.

The terrain: Fairly easy, with some climbs but not steep or overly long. Suitable for a day visitor, but be wary of slippery mud in places. The upper and lower longer legs are both fairly level, with a rise and fall to/from them of about 40m/130ft. This gives an impressive view into the valley you don't get from the lower track.

The name: Inspired by the pigs at Croft 3. I'm not sure if they've ever hunted for truffles though. I assume not..!

Please rehide this cache with care as it is in a fairly exposed location. If undergrowth has died back, please use a rock or two to cover/hide it well.

My other Rum caches:
Rum Runner.
Rum Fellow.
Red Rum.
Rum Deal.
Rum Do.
Rum Bunch.
Rum and Coke.
Rum Punch.
Eilean Rum (Isle of Rum, Small Isles).

Finally, sincere thanks to Scottish Natural Heritage for permission to hide this cache in the Rum National Nature Reserve and to Sean, who's its local guardian. I hope it brings extra visitors to their remarkable island.
