Geocache Description:

The Hobbit - Bilbo Baggins

The coordinates listed above will NOT lead you to this cache.

Bilbo Baggins was born on September 22 by Shire Reckoning in the year 2890 of the Third Age. He was the only son of Bungo Baggins and Belladonna Took.

Bilbo, a hobbit in comfortable middle age at 50 years old, was hired in spite of himself as a "burglar" by the wizard Gandalf and 13 dwarves led by their king Thorin Oakenshield on a quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain and its treasure from the dragon Smaug. Bilbo was between 3' and 3'6'' in height. He had curly brown hair on his head and on his feet. He wore green velvet breeches, red or yellow waistcoat (with brass/gold buttons), brown or green jacket, dark green hood and cloak. He received the green cloak from Dwalin as they embarked on their journey to the Lonely Mountain.

Bilbo's first duty on this journey was to investigate a light in the distance that turned out to be a fire with three Stone-trolls around it. Bilbo attempted to snatch something from the trolls to bring back to the Dwarves, to show that he was a first class burglar. However, he was caught and the Dwarves who attempted to help him were captured as well. Fortunately, Gandalf was able to trick the trolls into arguing with one another until daybreak, which turned them all to stone. After rescuing the party, the wizard led Bilbo and the party to the trolls' cave. In the cave, they found some treasure and a number of weapons were found. Bilbo took an elvish dagger from the trolls' collection, which he would later name Sting.

Another souvenir from his adventures was the One Ring, which he found in the goblin tunnels near Gollum’s lake. Bilbo was noteworthy as the first ring-bearer in the history of Middle-earth to give up the One Ring voluntarily.

I come from under the hill, and under the hills and over the hills my paths led. And through the air. I am he that walks unseen. ... I am the clue - finder, the web - cutter, the stinging fly. I was chosen for the lucky number. ... I am he that buries his friends alive and drowns them and draws them alive again from the water. I came from the end of a bag, but no bag went over me. ... I am the friend of bears and the guest of eagles. I am Ringwinner and Luckwearer; and I am Barrel - rider... Spoken to Smaug the dragon.
