12-12-12: A Cataclysmic Event (Rotorua) Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

GenCuster: Archived. Just in case we wake up tomorrow and there is no tomorrow. Which is what I'd expect, as then it would be today. [8)]

Thanks to all who attended - it was fun [8D]. Cheers, GC.

Geocache Description:

This event, being held in Rotorua, New Zealand, is part of a Worldwide Multi-Event on the 12th of December 2012, celebrating the date 12/12/12. It also happens to be the 12th month of the 12th year of Geocaching!

WHAT: A meet-up with fellow geocachers

WHERE: The published coordinates (in the 'Bill Lyle' room)

WHEN: Anytime between 4:30 to 7:00 pm (16:30 - 19:00)

WHY: To celebrate the 12th of December 2012, and participate in the last worldwide multi-event in this series.
Other reasons? My Birthday... My 1,000th Cache... Pick a Tree, Any Tree... Mega 2012 catchup... News of Mega 2013 & Mega 2014 plans... Any reasons you can think of... The event will be mainly a social gathering to get back into the swing of things, meet some old and (hopefully) new friends, gather ideas for a future 'skills training' event...
If I can organise 'that' video to be shown before the End of the World, I will...

HOW: By physically signing the provided log at the event.

Huh! What's all this stuff about the End of the World? Will it be A Cataclysmic Event?

The Mayan calendar is based (not surprisingly) on the Mayan system of counting. They used several different cycles, such as a 260 day "short count" cycle, and a longer 5,125 year "long count" cycle. The date 21-12-12 is considered to correspond to to the end of a 5,125 year long count cycle. Some have chosen to interpret the end of the long count as the end of the Mayan calendar and hence a prediction of the end of the world, whereas it is really just the end of one calendar period. Similar in concept to the way we track Centuries or Millennia. For amusement, read this.

The last Cataclysmic Event in this area was 10 June 1886.

I will have some 12-12-12 Geocoins available at the event. At this stage I have obtained 10. One for me! One as a (the?) 'door prize' and five have been pre-ordered. So there are 3 available on the date and more are available to order. I'll post pics and further details soon, but in the meantime, look for the 12-12-12 Event in Dunedin. We have the privilege of sharing their coins. Cost will be at least $20 ea as there may be some Import costs to account for. Again, I will post further details as they come to hand.

A Geocaching Souvenir will also be automatically added to your Geocaching Profile by attending - and logging online - this Event.

The venue will have available snacks, meals and the beverage of your choice. A neat standard of dress applies, as do all the usual Licensed Premises R&R's.

I have created some specific caches to 'play' in association with this event:
