Kairuri (Rotorua) Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Growly Bear: As there's been no cache to find for some time, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.

Geocache Description:

This Multi-Cache was published in conjunction with the
12-12-12: A Cataclysmic Event (Rotorua) event.

It's a sign! I love signs!
- Placed for a Cacher who thinks that Coordinates on Objects are Awesome -
This is also a great opportunity to use your GPSr's functionality.

This simple Multi-Cache requires you to start at the given waypoint, where you will see a sign.
This sign could be useful to you, for all manner of GPS related purposes*.
If this number doesn't excite you?
check your pulse - you might be dead! ('in' joke for locals)

To locate the Final (GZ) you will have to project a waypoint.
It's not too hard - check your GPSr's manual.
(Who Me? RTFM? I think not...)

If your GPS is set to use True North, use heading 317 Degrees.
If your GPS is set to use Magnetic North, use heading 296 Degrees.
In either case, Project a Waypoint 37 metres.
(There is no need to walk into the lake and no ducks, seagulls or swans
should be harmed when attempting this cache. Squirrels though?
They are another matter entirely!
)

A wheely-cacher will require an assistant to retrieve the cache.

*** Cache contains Log Sheet Only - Bring Your Own Pen. Thanks. ***

Teamwork may be required. The GZ is in plain sight but so are you - and there are literally hundreds of people here per day. And cars parked, all drivers staring at you. The Difficulty rating reflects this.

*To use this number in a somewhat meaningful and accurate way, you would need to set your GPS to use: Map Datum Geod Datm '49; Map Spheroid International; and Position Format hddd° mm' ss.s".
This is not required to do for this cache.

Optional: To prove the accuracy of your GPS:

  1. Retain your current GPS settings: Map Datum WGS 84; Map Spheroid WGS 84; and Position Format hddd° mm.mmm'.

  2. Mark a waypoint, placing your GPS on the centre of the sign.
    • If your GPS has an 'Average' function, use that; or if it has a 'Time' function use that; otherwise let the GPS mark the waypoint for as long as it can. I strongly suggest a minimum of 3 minutes.
(3 minutes will enable an accurate 'fix'. Essential for placing any geocache and your GPS must have been on for a good while. It is pointless turning your GPS on, then immediately marking a waypoint. It will be inaccurate by 10's of metres if you've been using the GPS locally and could read anything at all if the GPS was last used in another location. The GPS needs time to synchronise with the satellites.)

  3. Your Waypoint should be exactly the same as the published coordinates of this cache.
Want to prove this? I did. Take note of the location on the sign (the rest can be done later, at home).
    • Set your GPS to use: Map Datum Geod Datm '49; Map Spheroid International; and Position Format hddd° mm' ss.s".
    • Look at your Waypoint on your GPS.
    • It should read the same as the location on the sign.
    • If it doesn't, you could manually key the location from the sign into your GPS. Then see how far away it is from your waypoint.
    • Finally, change your GPS back to WGS 84, etc. Compare the location against your waypoint again. Even if they were the same in hddd° mm' ss.s" format, there may be a slight difference in hddd° mm.mmm' format.

      My reading was S 38° 07.869' E 176° 15.222' - averaged over 3 minutes on a Garmin Oregon 300, Software Version 4.20.

(Results may vary according to GPS and Software Version - always update to the latest firmware if possible)
