A Knight with the King & Queen of Piel Island Cache In Trash Out Event

This cache has been archived.

Simply Paul: Time to archive this bijou eventette - but a good one. I'll get around to logging it soon!
Thanks to Uilebheist (who I spent my time on the island with) and duncscott (who I didn't meet but am happy they 'attended') for joining me on a strange adventure on a curious corner of Cumbria. Friendly folk up here [:)]

I hope to be back for a Saturday day-time event some time; the island is begging for a GC BBQ meet!

Geocache Description:

While I was at the NW Mega in August 2012 I made a pilgrimage to Piel Island, and was surprised to discover there's never been a cache event there... I chatted to the King & Queen about my idea for a CITO meet at the time and thanks to them, a proclamation was issued: Set it and Litter-Picking (possible) Campers in (optional) Fancy Dress will come!

CITO event with (optional) Camping afterwards, starting from the above co-ords on Piel Island, Cumbria. From 5pm to 6pm (when the last boat leaves) on Friday the 21st of June 2013, with optional camping 'til late'.

As I've always liked islands and noted some litter on this one when I visited in 2012, it seemed a good idea to hold my first ever semi-camping event (also open to day visitors) here, make it a CITO meet (please bring your own bag and gloves for some beach combing and litter picking. I'll supply a sharps box and remove anything manageable that's collected), suggest fancy dress and generally have a fun Friday night!

Further details to follow - I suggest you add this cache to your watch list if interested, as I'll add information as notes on it.

Things to do ahead of the meet: Contact the King or Queen beforehand to book camping, via this link, if you're planning to stay on the island after the last boat leaves at 6pm. Post a Will Attend, of course (letting me know if you're planning to camp and how many people, please) and let your friends know. Then get planning your historic fancy dress (I hope to be borrowing a friend's LARP armour) and thinking up games to play on the longest evening of the year. Great weather has been booked :)

Things to do there: Meet the 'King of Piel', Steve Chattaway, and his good lady wife, the Queen, who run the island's pub together. You may have seen them on Martin Clunes' TV series The Islands of Britain. Explore the castle ruins, run around the island (it's about a mile), relax in The Ship Inn, decorate your tent, dress up as a Viking, Knight, Pirate, or the lady version of any of those...

Getting there: Accessible only via a tiny ferry from Roa Island to the north, or a careful mile-and-a-half low-tide walk over the sands from Walney Island to the west/south, this is a spot you're going to need to carry your own camping to... Or just come for the CITO and leave this interesting, pretty place cleaner and tidier than you found it.

Bonus: The King and Queen have graciously agreed to allow a fresh cache to be left on the island during my visit! GCQM9K has been here since September '05, so I think it's time the island got a puzzle, letterbox or something else a bit fun... A local may also wish to set an Earth Cache here, perhaps?

Tide times corrected to BST - the same as your watch/phone in June!: If you're thinking of walking to/from this event rather than jumping on a small boat, this info (also below), might help to keep you safe and dry. It's useful if you're thinking of walking to Sheep Island to do GC11M6Y too. Your tides are-
Friday 21st: Low 4:15AM 1.79m / High 10:09AM 8.41m / Low 4:44PM 1.44m / High 10:37PM 8.73m
Sunrise 4:39AM - Sunset 9:49PM.
Saturday 22nd: Low 5:15AM 1.28m / High 11:02AM 8.90m / Low 5:41PM 1.05m / High 11:28PM 9.25m
Sunrise 4:39AM - Sunset 9:49PM.
