CCAR Coins

We have minted a special Calgary Cache and Release geocoin that is trackable on geocaching.com. As a special thank you (for this event only) we will provide one free coin to every cacher that has hidden one or more caches for the CCARS12. If you have not picked up your coin during the event, please contact us.

The coin is for sale at the GeoWyrm store. Get a second coin so you can let it travel or buy one as a FTF prize! It is a great coin and the only trackable Calgary Area Cachers coin!

Distribution and caches

One of the goals for this CCAR was to have more caches hidden in the South of Calgary, as traditionally the caches were hidden in the North (West). Looking at the distribution of the caches (below) we conclude that the South has gained a large number of good caches and we would like to thank all hiders for that!

Hiding caches

The information below is for future reference only. Since the event has ended, you cannot hide a cache for CCARS12 anymore. No fear, there will be another event like this in the fall!

If you want to hide a cache for the event... GREAT! We allow cachers to hide as many caches as they want. Each cache can only be entered in one category though!

We encourage everyone to put out their best hide. Don't just stick a nano in a tree but put out a cache that you would like to find! We are organizing many events and provide resources for you to learn and get feedback on cache ideas to ensure that you can put out a great quality cache!

All the caches will be held for publication by our reviewer Cache Effect so they can all be published at the same time. Puzzles will be published earlier than the other caches to give cachers sufficient time to solve the puzzles or trade hints . The puzzles will be released on May 21st followed by the rest of the caches on May 24th.

Cache Submission

To give Cache Effect sufficient time to do a proper review of the caches, your CCARS entry has to be submitted by May 17th. The caches will be held for publication after they have been reviewed.

  • To facilitate pocket queries and bookmarks, please make sure your cache title ends with "CCARS12". So if you plan on hiding a cache named "A Great Spot", make sure the title will be "A Great Spot - CCARS12".
  • Your cache description should have an introductory paragraph that reads:
"This cache has been placed for the CCARS12 event, held May 26-27, 2012. It should not be found prior to noon on Saturday, May 26, 2012. Caches for the CCARS12 event are released early so the geocaching community can plan their routes prior to the event start."
You can also just include the following image in the 'Short Description' section of your cache page (just copy the blue text below the image and paste it into the 'Short Description' box)
    <img src="http://ccar.calgarycachers.net/category_icons/ccars12/hidericon.png">
  • To indicate which category you're entering your cache, please include a category banner (see images below) in your cache description.
  • When you submit your cache page, be sure to add a reviewer note that reads:
"This cache has been placed for the CCARS12 event, held May 26-27, 2012. Please release it with the other CCARS12 caches on May 21 (puzzles) or May 24 (others)."

Hiding radius

The caches for CCAR can be placed in a radius of 40 km around Calgary Tower. See the map below for details

Categories

We want to support, encourage and reward what people like in caches. This is not the same for everybody but based on the survey feedback from the last CCAR we selected categories that embodied what most people considered to be good caches.

Newcomer

This category is for those that have never hidden a CCAR cache before. Come to the pre-events to learn how to put our a great cache. The members of the organizing committee have all placed multiple hides. If you want advice on any part of cache placement, container or web page, just contact us.

Kid-friendly

Impress the youngest cachers with a good cache, theme or swag. Win their hearts and their vote!

Non-Traditional

Loved by some, ignored by others. A clever mystery, fun multi, great letterbox, inspiring wherigo or interesting earth cache. There is a lot of variety that should allow you to express your creativity. Come to the pre-event to get some tips on making your cache even better.

Custom Container

Ditch the tupperware, you can do better! It is not hard to create your own container and add a little something something to your cache. Many cachers appreciate this extra effort and will reward your cache with favourite points. Not sure where to start? Contact one of the members of the organizing committee.

Location or Journey

Make it worth peoples while to get to your cache. Show them parts of our beautiful city that they might not be familiar with. A good location could also be meaningful to you (please explain). As there are many nice areas in our city, this category will have 5 winners! One for each city quadrant and one for 'outside city limits'. Tip: Hide caches in the south east or south west to increase your chance of winning!

Don't judge me

Are you only interested in favourite points and don't care too much for a prize? This category is for you. You will still get the recognition of many people enjoying your hide (and the many logs that tell you about it).

Banners

Please use the following images on your cache page to ensure that the cache is placed in the correct category. Caches that do not have a banner will be placed in the "Do not judge me" category. To insert the banner into your page, make sure that the "description is in HTML" checkbox is checked and copy the code below each image into your description.

Extra prizes!

In addition to honoring the winners of each category, we will also have prizes for the runners-up, door prizes and special prizes for kids. That means a higher chance to win some great prizes!

Pre-Events

To support people in finding and hiding caches during the CCAR events, we will organize three events leading up to the spring edition:

All events will be hosted at the CNIB (location of the Christmas Party). During and after the events experienced cachers will be available to help you out to help you get your best cache ever out.

Finding caches

The 24-hour caching frenzy will start at noon on May 26, 2012. You are not permitted to find or log a cache before the start of the event.

The weekend will be packed with geocaching fun! The following events give some anchor points to the days, but feel free to set your own schedule!

  • Pizza & Beer - Thursday May 24th, 2012
  • Launch Event - Saturday 26th May, 2012 We'll start off on the right foot with a CITO event (GC3CHBC) This is a great time to finalize your car-pool arrangements, meet your fellow seekers and get our GPS receivers readied!
  • Midnight Event - Saturday 26th May, 2012- 11:59pm - Sunday, 27th May, 2011 - 1:30am Twelve hours after hitting the road, it's time to pull over and take a break! Want to know who else is still out there at this crazy hour? Need to take on some energy? This is the only place to be at midnight on this wild night!
  • Wrap-up Event - Sunday 27th May, 2012 - noon Twenty-four hours later and it's time to park that CCAR car and cosy on in with your fellow road-weary hunters! Grab something refreshing to drink and pick up some lunch, fill out your voting card and sit back and share your mostly true lies from the highways and byways!

Please make sure to log your "Will attend" so each event organizer knows how many people can be expected
