Philip Kearny was a flamboyant adventurer and soldier who most notably fought for the United States of America in the Mexican, Indian, and Civil Wars. During his brilliant military career he proved himself honorable, chivalrous, and compassionate towards his men, with a joie de vivre that inspired his troops in battle. Kearny's courage earned him the respect of his soldiers and fellow officers alike, the greatest of which came from General-in-Chief Winfield Scott who called him "the bravest and most perfect soldier" he had ever known.
While in division command he devised the so-called Kearny patch to easily identify the men of the Jersey Brigade. It also built their morale by inspiring an esprit de corps. After his death this system was expanded into a system of corps and division patches which eventually covered most of the Federal forces.
Kearny was often seen in battle with his sword in one hand and reins in his teeth. He died at the close of Second Manassas when he rode out to see about a gap in the Union lines and mistakenly rode straight into a line of rebel infantry instead. His reckless soul would not allow him to surrender. As he raced from the scene, riding low on his horse, a bullet from a rebel volley struck him in the back and he died instantly.
