Help! The Excise Men are after me, and I need to travel on...and fast! Or it will be my fate to be impressed into the Royal Navy. Some day I will find me a way to cross the waters to America. There is a place in Oregon called Newport that would suit me just fine.
'Tis true, these old black houses of Mudeford in Christchurch Bay have seen many a smuggler. How else can people get their wine and spirits, tea and tobacco, when the duty on tea alone is 120%? 'Twas that fateful day, 16th July 1784, that did us in. 400 men strong we were, with 42,000 gallons of spirit and 8 tons of tea, all stacked on the jetty close by the Black House, ready to move out with 40 wagons and 300 horses. The Customs men, seven to a rowboat, don't give us no trouble, nor even the Revenue cutters with two dozen men apiece, but they brought HMS Orestes, an 18-gun sloop with a crew of 94. We got out booty away, but I was stranded ashore, and 'tis time to move on.
