The Krakatau volcano lies in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra in Indonesia. (S 06.06. E 105.25.).
The eruption and collapse of the caldera in August 1883 produced one of the largest explosions on Earth and destroyed much of the Krakatau island. The sound of the explosion could be heard even in Australia – 2000 km away. The Tsunami (37 m or 120 feet high) destroyed 300 villages and killed 36.000 people.
Since 1927 a new volcano started to grow within the old caldera: Anak Krakatau (Child of Krakatau). Today Anak Krakatau is 400 m high. The new volcano is also very active with regular eruptions in recent years.

Anak Krakatau has a diameter of about 1.700 m (1 mile) and is formed of black stones, ashes and sand erupted from inner earth. However, nature conquers the island again and a small band of plants surrounds the black island already.
