Irland bestand früher aus vier Provinzen, die sich in 32 Grafschaften (Countys) aufteilten. Die Provinzen haben in der Republik Irland heute keine Bedeutung mehr für die Verwaltung des Staates, sind aber im Bewusstsein der Bevölkerung präsent und zum Beispiel im Sport noch relevant. Die Grafschaften bilden bis heute das Gerüst der Verwaltungsgliederung. Sechs der neun historischen Grafschaften Ulsters gehören zu Nordirland und damit zum Vereinigten Königreich.

Ireland used to consist of four provinces divided into 32 counties. The provinces no longer have any significance in the Republic of Ireland for the administration of the state, but are present in the consciousness of the population and are still relevant in sports, for example. The counties are still the scaffolding of the administrative division. Six of the nine historic counties of Ulster belong to Northern Ireland and thus to the United Kingdom.
