About This Item

mapleleafwood

This wooden maple leaf recalls the maple leaf on the national flag of Canada.  Most people people living in the United States couldn’t name many cities in Canada, unless they live in the northern tier of states or Alaska.  This series of “Canada” travel bugs brings attention to the largest metropolitan areas in that country.

Halifax is the capital of the province of Nova Scotia. The metropolitan area had a population of 390,096 in 2011.  It is a major economic center in eastern Canada with a large concentration of government services and private sector companies.  Major employers and economic generators include the Department of National Defense, Dalhousie University, the Halifax Shipyard and the Port of Halifax. Agriculture, fishing, mining, forestry and natural gas extraction are major resource industries found in the rural areas of the municipality.

The first permanent European settlement in the region was on the Halifax Peninsula and it precipitated a war.  Edward Cornwallis arrived to establish Halifax with 13 transports and a sloop of war in 1749.  By unilaterally establishing Halifax, the British were violating earlier treaties with native peoples and the French.  The British quickly established forts to protect their interests.  All of the forts are within the modern Halifax regional municipality.
