Die Insel Alcatraz liegt in der Bucht von San Francisco, Kalifornien in den USA. Sie ist 2,2 km vom Festland entfernt [1]. Früher wurde sie als Standort für ein befestigtes Fort genutzt, danach als Hochsicherheitsgefängnis. Inzwischen dient sie als Touristenattraktion. Alcatraz steht unter der Aufsicht des US National Park Service.

Die 500 Meter lange und bis zu 41 Meter hohe Sandsteininsel diente nicht nur als Standort für ein Gefängnis. Auf der 85.000 m² großen Insel wurde auch der erste Leuchtturm der US-amerikanischen Westküste erbaut.
