The idea for geocoins was inspired by challenge coins, which are coins bearing an organization's insignia or emblem and carried by the organization's members. I was honored to be presented with two challenge coins while attending the Portland Police Bureau's inaugural coin challenge event on Dec 5, 2015.
This is the Z-Man challenge coin. It honors Mark Y. Zylawy, "Z-Man," a highly regarded Portland police officer who died January 27, 2008 in an accident at the age of 40. He worked as a district officer in Northeast Portland for 17 years. The Z-Man Scholarship Foundation strives to cover portions of tuition, student fees and TriMet passes for its recipients. Additionally, each scholarship applicant is matched with a mentor from the law enforcement community.
The Z-Man challenge coin is not a traditional geocoin, and therefore was not originally a trackable. However, I've assigned a tracking code to the coin so that geocachers who see it can discover it.
