Galileo Galilei (15. Februar 1564 - 08. Januar 1642), war ein italienischer Physiker, Mathematiker, Astronom und Philosoph, der bahnbrechende Entwicklungen auf mehreren Gebieten der Wissenschaften machte. Er verbesserte das Teleskop und erforschte die Astronomie - die fundamentalen Grundlagen für die Navigation.

Das nach ihm benannte europäische Navigationssatellitensystem soll weltweit Daten zur genauen Positionsbestimmung liefern und ähnelt im Aufbau dem US-amerikanischem NAVSTAR-GPS und dem russischen GLONASS-System.  

Galileo basiert auf 30 Satelliten (27 plus 3 Ersatz).

Die ersten beiden Satelliten wurden im Oktober 2011 ins All befördert.

Since the beginning of time, human beings have looked to the sky to determine their whereabouts. Traditionally, the Sun and the pattern of fixed stars have been their guides. Galileo Galilei (15 February 1564 – 8 January 1642), commonly known as Galileo, was an Italian physicist, mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher who played a major role in the Scientific Revolution and in particular he provided major improvements to the telescope and consequently to the astronomical observations, the fundamental basics for a good navigation in the past.

Today, at the dawn of the second millennium, constellations of man-made satellites have taken over as beacons to guide the way. The Galileo programme is Europe's contribution for a state-of-the-art global satellite navigation system, offering services with outstanding performance in accuracy, continuity and availability under civilian control. It will be more advanced, more efficient and more reliable than the current US GPS monopoly. The fully deployed system will consist of 30 satellites and the associated ground infrastructure. The launch of the first two satellites is planned for October 2011.
