Please drop this item in rural OR Premium Member Only caches. Do not place it in an urban cache or abandon it at a caching event. Transport the bug in the original plastic bag for as long as the bag lasts; the bag keeps the trackable clean and prevents tangling with other items. Otherwise, take the travel bug anywhere you wish. No permission is needed to leave the U.S.
Photos in the travel bug logs are appreciated. I will be re-post them here, where they can be seen by other cachers.
This is one of a series of heart-shaped items purchased in different places and converted into travel bugs. The items are named either for their places of origin or for towns of the Texas Panhandle-South Plains with interesting names or histories.
Plains is the county seat of Yoakum County, on the New Mexico-Texas state line. The city name derives from the topography. The county is named for a Texas historian. Yoakum County is one of 30 prohibition or entirely dry counties in the state of Texas. The county contained primarily nomadic buffalo hunters and a few scattered ranchers until after 1900. Originally settled by a family named Miller, it wasn't until 1905 when W. J. Luna moved his family to what is now Plains. Mr. Luna was the founder of the town and took responsibility for naming it. He donated a lot in town for each voter and land for both the Yoakum County Cemetery and the Plains City Cemetery. Luna's wife Mary was the first interment. With the organization of Yoakum County in 1907, Plains was the overwhelming choice for county seat.
