WW II-28th Infantry in Normandy TB

This travel bug has two modest goals, to survive more than five years and to be moved by 25 cachers.  As of 18-Aug-18 it had been circulating for 5.8 years, but it had been moved by only 20 cachers.

Please drop this item in rural OR Premium Member Only caches.  Do not place it in an urban cache or abandon it at a caching event.  Transport the bug in the original plastic bag for as long as the bag lasts; the bag keeps the trackable clean, protects the number and prevents tangling with other items.  Otherwise, take the travel bug anywhere you wish.  No permission is needed to leave the U.S.

Replica Shoulder Patch. This travel bug is one of several made to recognize the US Army Divisions that fought in Normandy and elsewhere in France in 1944. In the summer of 2012 the travel bug owner activated, dipped, then, in October, took the travel bugs to Normandy beaches, towns, museums and the American cemetery above Omaha Beach. Some of the bugs were released in France, but most were brought back to the states to be put into circulation.
   
The 28th Infantry Division is nicknamed the "Keystone Division," as it was formed from units of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard; Pennsylvania is known as the "Keystone State."  After training in Southampton, England, and the Seabank Hotel in Porthcawl, Wales, the 28th Infantry Division landed in Normandy, France, on 22 July 1944, and entered the hedgerow struggle north and west of Saint-Lô. They took Percy and Gathemo. The Division began to roll north and east on overcoming resistance at Le Neubourg and Elbeuf.  The 28^thtook the brunt of the German Ardennes offensive on 16 December.  They fought doggedly in place using all available personnel and threw off the enemy timetable before withdrawing for reorganization because its units had been badly mauled.
