    Found this beautiful small brass cannon - and trying to take the bug's goal for serious.

    THANKS for sending this nice bug on it's way!

    • Bunker-turret for MG and gren.-launchers The small brass Cannon went to the famous MAGINOT-line on the French side of th French-German frontier that was construct after the end of WW I to stop the Germans from entering the country another time.
    • Main-Entry for troops and ammunition The railways served to supply the Fort of Schoenbourg with ammunition, food and was also access for the men going in and out.
    • Movable anti-tank-gun, changable to twin-MG The 80mm (?) Anti-Tank-Gun protected the area of the entance against possible attacs from troops and tanks.
    • Area of the bunker's entrance Here all the material that came from outside the bunker was tansported to the 'secure layer' of the structure 30 meters under the earth. There was an elevator for the material - and stairs for the soldiers :-)
    • endless galleries More than three kilometers of galleries, all digged by hand by the French, connect the storage, kitchen, infirmery, powerplant and the six fighting-bunkers. Although we went only to one of the fighting-bunkers, we made about 3km underneath the earth.
    • ...really there!
    • the cannon was...
    • filters for entering air The horrors of the mutual gas-attacks made the constructors invent an overpressure-air-ventilation-system to feed the whole installation.
    • 'on ne passe pas' The device 'no way through' was the sentence for the Fort's soldiers, and in deed, althogh the bunkder was attacked by artillery uo to 40cms, tanks and airplanes, the agressors didn't pass.
    • The soldier's life under earth This room served 36 (!!) men who worked in three consecutive layers around the clock as a home. One bed was used for three soldiers. The excellent, realistic exhibition we saw there left us with cold shiver...
    • 80mm (?) semi-automatic twin howitzer One artillery-turret housed two parallel firing howitzers which fired 'blind', that means elevation and direction of the fire were positioned without vising from the cannon itself. The data were transmitted by pone from the scouts outside.
    • mountable turrets The concealed (?) mortar-turrets appeared only for firing and dissapeared instantaneous after firing. The enormous weight (100 tons!) of the construction was moved by a simple balanced mechanism that one soldier could move all alone.
    • observer's tower with gunsmoke-exhausts The 6 Bunkers of the Fort were able to cover the full angle of 360° to be protected against infantry attacks.
    • Observer's tower and howitzers turret (drawn in) This is the view from outside a bunker, the howitzer's tower is drawn in. Firing, it would mount for 80cm, then disappear quickly.
    • Nice view to the sun going down The little brass cannon is sighting out against Bunker Nr. 4 (?).
    • a monument of static warfare The bunkers and forts of the Maginot Line were relicts of a type of war, that wasn't conducted any more when the 1940s attacks happened. The level of mechanization allowed the offenders to easily circumvent this line of defense and just avoid combat.
