To travel to everywhere they play Hockey from Country to Country visiting Hockey Rinks of every size and shape, new and old.
I want to meet all of the players that play on these rinks and hear their stories, and maybe get a picture or two in front of those rinks or with those players....
This is a little about my office, my work, and my family history:
CREASE:
The half-moon shaped area directly in front of the goal tender. It is 6 feet deep and 12 feet long and marked off by red lines. Offensive players, who do not have possession of the puck, may not enter.
GOAL LINE:
The red line which runs between the goal posts and extends in both directions to the side boards.
BLUE LINES:
The pair of one-foot wide blue lines which extend across the ice at a distance of 60 feet from each goal. These lines break the ice into attacking, neutral and defending zones.
GOAL CAGE:
Sometimes called a net. It is 6 feet wide and 4 feet high. Its back is enclosed with netting in order to catch the puck when shot into it.
RED LINE:
Also known as the center ice line, it divides the ice surface in half. It comes into play in icing. It is also where the puck is dropped for face-offs at the beginning of periods and after a goal is scored.
CENTER CIRCLE:
A circle, measuring 30 feet in diameter, at the center of the ice where the puck is dropped in a face-off to start the game and to restart the game after a goal has been scored.
THE ICE SURFACE
It takes 30 hours and 14,300 gallons of water to prepare a rink for ice hockey.
PAINT:
Lines painted on a bottom layer of ice; painting takes 6 hours.
ICE:
3/4 - 1" thick.
PIPES:
Circulating mixture of glycol and water cools concrete or sand.
CONCRETE:
Cool concrete freezes water.
TEMPERATURES:
3 feet above the ice: 50°F
Surface: 20°F
Concrete: 17°F
The ZAMBONI is a highly specialized machine that cleans the ice between periods. In its travel across the ice, it scrapes the loose shavings off and lays down a layer of hot water. The water must be hot to melt the upper ice surfaces and weld a smooth sheet. It takes just minutes to freeze.
SHAVING
A blade (A) scrapes the surface of the ice.
COLLECTING
After a horizontal screw (B) gathers the shavings, a vertical screw (C) propels them into the snow tank.(D)
WASHING
Water is fed from a wash-water tank (E) to a squeegee-like conditioner (F), which smooths the ice. Dirty water is vacuumed, filtered and returned to the tank.
RENEWING
Clean, hot water is spread on the ice by a towel (G) behind the conditioner.
