About This Item

Helmets

1.       One crash kills most helmets. That Styrofoam layer between the shell and your head is your best friend. The expanded polystyrene (Styrofoam) crushes under impact to give your head approximately 6/100ths of a second extra stopping time. That 6/100ths of a second can be the difference between you getting back up and riding off and having to relearn the alphabet. The foam also distributes the point of impact over a larger area.

2.       Proper Fit

Your helmet should neither dig into your scalp nor flop around. The better the fit the more protection you will have. To ensure proper adjustment start with the interior pads. Most are held in place with adhesive or hook and loop strips, which can be added or removed to customize fit or to wash when they get dirty. Next adjust the straps so that each V-buckle is positioned right below your ears, then cinch the main buckle so two fingers barely fit between your chin and the strap. To make sure the helmet is fitting correctly push the front of your helmet up. If it moves more than 1 inch, tighten the chin straps. Repeat with the back adjustment.

After some fun in the sun and a few long airplane rides, the nerd coin is finally back in Wisconsin, blue and shivering while hiking on the Ice Age Trail. Hmmmm... That could describe zoesbrother on the IAT, too. 😈

    • nerd coin on the IAT It's huddling in the "A" of the word "TRAIL".
    • Follow the yellow markers.
    • nerd coin on a trail marker
Visited 10/27/2014 sandlanders took it to Kona’s Airport TB Hotel Hawaii - 52.92 miles  Visit Log

No stay in the TB hotel by the airport for the nerd coin, although we did drop one trackable here. No, the nerd coin will be going back to Wisconsin with us late tomorrow evening. We thought this would be a good place to have the nerd coin visit because it is right along the route of the bike portion of the Ironman Triathlon that was held on the Big Island a couple of weeks ago. Zoesbrother would love to ride his bicycle here! And he would be wearing a helmet! 😁

    • road from the hills down to the ocean How would you like to ride your bike down this hilly street, zoesbrother?
Visited 10/26/2014 sandlanders took it to Hawaii Volcanoes N.P. - Caldera and Crater Hawaii - 52.08 miles  Visit Log

The nerd coin visited the volcanoes with us today. We weren't near the site where the lava is flowing towards a small town, but we did get to see the smoke coming out from the crater inside of the Kilauea caldera. The nerd coin didn't want us getting too close to the hot stuff because it is made of metal and might melt!

    • The nerd coin pretends to dive into the crater. Ahhhhhhhh!!! Watch out, nerd coin!

Visited 10/25/2014 sandlanders took it to Puako Petroglyphs Hawaii - 36.84 miles  Visit Log

Yay! The nerd coin gets to visit another petroglyphs site! Remember the place in New Mexico in 2010? This was a great location to visit, complete with a trail through some creepy trees. The nerd coin even posed by some sample petroglyphs at the start of the trail, the ones that are modern and meant to be examined, unlike the ancient ones in the protected area far from the parking lot.

We took the nerd coin with us when we went to visit the national historical park near this wayside. There are no caches in the park itself. We enjoyed the scenery and the history of the place, while the nerd coin just wanted to hang out with the tiki gods...

Visited 10/23/2014 sandlanders took it to Tour de Kona Hawaii - 162.71 miles  Visit Log

We had the nerd coin still packed after our flight from Honolulu to Kona, so it didn't make an appearance at this bike-related cache... but it was there! Maybe zoesbrother can come to Kona someday to do the Ironman Triathlon! 😈😈😈

    • Somewhere in there is the cache.
Visited 10/23/2014 sandlanders took it to 4 guys and a gal Hawaii - 4,215.77 miles  Visit Log

We took the nerd coin along with us as we did this cache that takes us to several spots in the Waikiki area, but we didn't see any statues that commemorated the nerd coin's visit to Hawaii. Guess we'll have to settle for statues of famous Hawaiians and other visitors... πŸ˜‰

Visited 10/22/2014 sandlanders took it to I'm So Board Hawaii - 4,128.77 miles  Visit Log

Aloha, nerd coin! You made it to Hawaii! Time for a little fun on the island! The waves were really rough when we first came to Honolulu, thanks to the hurricane, but there were people out surfing in it. The nerd coin thought it would be cool to grab one of the boards here to catch a wave on this nicer day, but we told it "no". The water here in Waikiki is a beautiful shade of blue-green, just like the nerd coin.

Visited 10/16/2014 sandlanders took it to Roche-A-Cri: WGA State Park series Wisconsin - 30.92 miles  Visit Log

The nerd coin took a hike with us in the park today before heading out on a BIG trip with us. This is the first official WGA cache that the nerd coin has visited, but if it wants to see more of them, maybe zoesbrother can take it on some travels. 😎

Retrieve It from a Cache 1/5/2014 sandlanders retrieved it from Sweet Treat Meet & Greet #5 Wisconsin   Visit Log

The nerd coin had a bite of blue cupcake at the Sweet Treat event today, and even got a bit reacquainted with zoesbrother. We were told to keep the nerd with us to take on more of our travels. Will do! πŸ‘

    • Helmets are a good idea for skiing, too! Zoesbrother gets ready to ski on the hard water to a cache.
