cloversmom: I've decided to archive this one because I cannot find a method of hiding a regular or small sized cache here that doesn't get muggled or found by maintenance folks. I may put a micro somewhere around here since it is so close to my house, but I am not all that excited about any particular micro hide at the moment. Sorry for the delay, I was hoping that I was onto a hide style that would work, but it is not going to after all.

Geocache Description:

A cammo'd small lock and lock at a historic Oakland park. I tried to make this wheelchair accessible, but it does require travel on grass and bending approximately 1 foot above the ground. There is a pencil and pen with a sign-only log and room for small trade items.

Bushrod has a special place in my heart because I live less than one block away, as I prepared to place this cache, I learned more about the park and it's interesting history. In the last two decades, at least, it's use has been affected by crime and reputation. If you approach the cache from the nearest street, you will most likely only encounter dogs and their companions, these days. A warning to those with dogs, I have heard about tickets happening their at night.

Here is some of the history of the park, that I found on the web.

In May, 1892, 2,000 Adventists encamped at Bushrod park on Shattuck avenue. It was the general camp meeting of the Adventist conference of California, Nevada and Utah. The tents numbered 300 and were arranged in regular order with streets, etc. A large circular pavilion held the crowds and speakers.

A park commission was formed in 1908, creating a system of parks and playgrounds such as Bushrod, Mosswood and Defemery. Lakeside Park at Lake Merritt was finally developed. The municipal boathouse. The colonnade.

The concept of a city-run arts program for Oakland residents first came about at Bushrod Park in 1948. The city parks and recreation department during the post World War II- era was a nationwide leader in providing affordable arts-related classes.

Rickey Henderson got his start there.

North Oakland Voters Alliance is a very active neighborhood group that holds an annual neighborhood garage sale here.

In February 2005, Patrick McCullough shot tresspassing teenager Melvin McHenry in the arm and side. McCullough alleged that McHenry was reaching for a gun when a group of youths had aggressively surrounded him in his own front yard. This case has been controversial and McCullough has been seen by some as a neighborhood hero who has cleaned up a drug-infested neighborhood and by others as a youth-fearing hater who shot a teenager under questionable circumstances.

In April, 2006 a huge slab of ice fell to Bushrod park leaving a large hole baffling meteoroligists. For more info look here (visit link)

UPDATE: 1/17/08-My second hiding spot got cleared, including the cache within it. This is probably my last attempt at a non-micro in this park. Hopefully it will stick.
