Geocache Description:

Take a trip back in time. can you imagine that the sea came till this spot ? You can find prove of this on this site.

This "mountain" was formed in the third era (70 millions years ago). During this time the sea came and went and each time left something behind. The light yellow sand "Tongeriaans zand" was deposited 34 million years ago. Here you can find some "limonietbanden" of oxidate iron. In the sand you can find many fossilized wormholes. When the Tongeriaanze see withdrew it left some small flat silex pebbles behind. Hereupon some "Diestiaanszand" was deposited. All the Hagelandse hills are northeast- southwest oriented . They are fossilized sandbanks that lay parallel with the shoreline of the at that time the DiestiaanseSea. When the sea retreated some 7 millions years ago the sandbanks came in contact with the air and the iron in the sand started to oxidate and formed the brown red sandstone. These stoned sandbanks withstand the erosion over the years that formed these valley's. You can find the sandbank from here till the north sea. People started to extract the iron and later on used it to build churches, castles en fortified walls. You can see this in Leuven were the city walls has the same structure as the stones you can find here.
