Carnifex Ferry Traditional Geocache
Cache Sleuth: The annual permit from West Virginia State Parks for this cache has expired, so it has to be removed and archived. Thanks to the 55 cachers who have posted "found it" logs for this hide over the past year. Watch for my new Henry Patterson cache which is coming soon and will be hidden nearby!

A family-friendly cache hidden along the Patterson Trail in
historic Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park, south of
Summersville, West Virginia.
For more details on the history, attractions and facilities of this
fine state park, please visit their official web site at:
http://www.carnifexferrybattlefieldstatepark.com/
To get to the park, from U.S. Route 19 go west on State Route 129
for about 5 miles. Then turn left onto Carnifex Ferry Road. From
there it is about one mile to the park. There are several parking
areas, but the one closest to the cache is at the playground/picnic
shelters. There is a short connector path to Patterson Trail
directly behind the rest rooms and concession stand. If you are
searching during the winter months and find this area closed, turn
right at the gate onto County Route 23. After a short distance, you
will see a parking area on the right. Just beyond this is where
Patterson Trail crosses the road. Just follow your GPS from
there.
Cache is in a half-gallon round container with an orange West
Virginia State Parks "Official Geocache" sticker. Initial contents
are: sewing kit, light sticks, mini carabiner clip, geocaching pin,
polished green rock, flower eraser, magnet, Bug Alert auto insect
repeller, Smokey Bear pencil sharpener, 1948 silver Roosevelt dime,
WVU decal, fossil coral on descriptive card, and a log book with
pen.
SPECIAL NOTE: The West Virginia Division of Natural
Resources discourages off-trail hiking in state parks as it
negatively impacts the environment. This cache is hidden just a few
feet off the trail, so please refrain from taking shortcuts or
engaging in unnecessary bushwhacking during your search.
