Presumed Dead, Part II: Libri Pestis Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Lostboy1966: It's been three years since I released these hides, and the elements were getting to the containers. Part I: Crossed Paths had sprung a leak which washed out the story notes. Part II: Libri Pestis had been reported missing, but the 'ol Book Of Plagues was still there, though a bit gnawed on by assorted bad critters with a taste for styrofoam. The final stage, The Rising, was kind of sad to take out of service. I had good memories of hiking this container in - thankfully nobody passed me on the trail that day when I was carrying a bag that had the suspicious shape of a human torso! [:o)]

Gustav Oremor (BTW that's Romero spelled backwards, as in George Romero) was a little beat up, but not in bad shape at all considering his three years sitting in the woods. For this trip I spared him the indignity of a bag, and hiked him out uncovered for all the world to see. Nobody did though - probably for the best.

So one of my favorite hide series bids farewell. My sincere thanks to everyone who took the time to hunt them and leave all those great logs. If you had half as much fun looking for these as I did putting them out, then I'd say it was worth it.

Now, what to do with this Ammo Box I need to recycle? Hmmmm....

Greg

Geocache Description:

Part two of a three-cache Series. Header coordinates are for parking only. See below for information needed to locate the actual cache coordinates. Please do not post spoilers in your logs.

You have investigated what you knew about Gustav Oremor, and wish that you hadn’t. The information that you have discovered is terrifying. Your first thought is to bring what you have learned to the police, but how would you explain it? You run through the scenario in your head:

You: “ I’ve found something out about this Oremor person, officer. His plan is to (you tell him what you have discovered).”
Desk Sergeant: “Righhht. And how did you come by this information?”
You: “Well, you see, I’m a Geocacher. I passed this guy on a trail once and followed him into the woods, and that’s how I found out!”
Desk Sergeant: “A Geo-what? I think I’d like our staff psychiatrist to have a little talk with you...”

No, that just won’t do. Against your better judgment, you locate the address where Gustav lived. Late one evening (good thing you have that headlamp for night-caching), you sneak in through an unlocked window to take a look around. The place has been stripped bare by the police of all possible evidence. All except the strange writings on the wall, that is. Much of what you see is undecipherable to you – strange glyphs and runes scrawled in a medium that you’d rather not guess at.

But in a corner of one of the rooms a pattern seems familiar. It almost looks like a topo map! Taking a closer look, you spy a few notations. One catches your attention: a small arrow pointing to something called “Libri Pestis”. Recalling the small bit of Latin you are familiar with, this might be a clue for something you are looking for based what you discovered in the woods recently. You take some quick notes and decide to get out of this creepy place before you get caught by the authorities...or worse.

Back in the comfort of your own home, you go to your computer to compare your copy of the map you sketched to some satellite imagery from the internet. Based on your readings, the thing you seek should be found near N41 15.XXX W073 22.XXX.

Steeling yourself for what lies ahead, you plug the numbers into your trusty GPSr. If you’re wrong about what you have discovered, you’ll come away from this trek feeling foolish. And if you’re right? Well, better not to think of such things…

Cache Notes:
This cache can be found at N41 15.XXX W073 22.XXX. To find the full coordinates to this cache, you must complete Presumed Dead, Part I: Crossed Paths. BRING PAPER AND PENCIL, as this cache also contains information needed to complete Presumed Dead, Part III: The Rising. Total round trip should be +/- .7 mile.
Cache is a 4x6 Lock&Lock hidden inside a themed container.
Officially, to hike this trail you should have a copy of the Saugatuck Valley Trails map as a permit, but on the outside chance you should meet a ranger and not have one handy, they are primarily concerned about illegal hunting/fishing, and generally are understanding of hikers. If you want a map, one can be obtained at Redding Town Hall off of Rt. 107.

Parking Tips:
Header coordinates are for a dirt parking lot. The actual trailhead is a bit further East down Valley Forge Road. There are pulloffs at the trailhead, but they are quite small.
