Wolf Rock lighthouse stands 8 miles off Land's End and can be seen from Gwennap Head on a clear day. Wolf Rock was a constant danger to shipping and finally in 1870 a light house was completed. The name "Wolf" comes from the saxon word "Yulf" which over the years became Gulf, Gulph, Gulfe and Wolf. The French called it "Gulf Roche"
The rock is surrounded by dep water and a swell covers it even in fair weather so construction was difficult. James Douglas started work in March 1862 but could only get onto the rock to work on 22 days thet year because of the swell!
When built the tower weighed some 3,296 tons. The stone blocks were cut and trial fitted in PenzanceThe first 39 feet of the tower is solid. The 7'9" inch wall tapers to 2' 3" by the time it reaches the tower some 116' above the rock. The Helipad on this lighthouse was the first on any lighthouse in the world and was built in 1972..
