Geocache Description:

This cache is located in the City of Grinnell, http://skyways.lib.ks.us/towns/Grinnell/. The terrain is flat but not really handicapped accessible due to cache placement. You will be looking for a 4X6X2 military first aide case. It contains a Kansas road map, the usual trade items, disclaimer, and log book.

Grinnell is America the way America is supposed to be. Grinnell is one of the historical small towns located just off I70. This makes it a perfect cache for travelers. Grinnell is a short distance from the Smoky Hill River Valley and the Smoky Hill Trail. Many important fossil finds have been made in the chalk beds along the Smokey Hill River because this area was once part of an inland sea. Early travelers and the Butterfield Overland Dispatch used the Smoky Hill Trial on their way to Denver and the Colorado gold fields. Grinnell was the second town in Gove County and was established around 1872. The first inhabitants were railroad workers and buffalo hunters. Grinnell was a shipping center for buffalo bones, buffalo hides, buffalo meat and cattle. One of biggest early businesses was the buffalo bone yard. The Cimarron, Dighton, Colby and Atwood trails went through Grinnell. Grinnell was originally started north of the railroad. Others wanted it located south of the railroad and a squabble ensued, including a building a fence and planting corn along the railroad to separate the north from the south. A fire ended the squabble as most of the town on the north side of the railroad burned. While in Grinnell take time to look around our town and visit our businesses. We have the best meat market and furniture store in the area. The grocery store serves lunch. Check out our 9 hole grass green golf course. Green fees for non-members are only $8.
