Remember When?
Fort Homer Hesterly Armory
Another in the Remember When? Series;

The history of the Fort Homer Hesterly Armory, built in 1940, on Howard Avenue and Cass Street - host to countless dances, high school graduations, wrestling matches and even performances by the king himself, Elvis Presley - is well known. But the armory’s future is less certain, now that the National Guard is at a new training center across the bay in Pinellas Park.

The “King”, according to other websites performed (or was scheduled to perform) at the armory on four different dates. In 1955, on the 8th of May, he performed two shows with Hank Snow. On July 31st he performed with Webb Pierce and Johnny Cash. In 1956, he performed three shows on Feb 19th. And, on August 5th, the tickets were selling for $1.50 General Admission, and $2.00 Reserved Admission.

Developers recently met to consider the possibilities of the building. Some of the ideas talked about were: skating rink, loft apartments on the second-level balcony, a film studio. The developers have until November, 2006 to submit their letters of interest to the city.

Whatever becomes of the armory building could prove crucial to the redevelopment of West Tampa.
